Warning: Spoilers for Star Wars: Ewoks #3 Within the expansive universe of Star Wars, the Ewoks are celebrated for their lives among the trees of Endor. However, the latest comic installment, set in the aftermath of Return of the Jedi, intriguingly introduces the possibility of a unique breed of Ewoks that thrived not in forests, but in aquatic environments. This raises questions about the diversity of Ewok tribes and their adaptations to different habitats. Unfortunately, this semi-aquatic village ultimately met its end as it sank beneath the waves.
In Star Wars: Ewoks #3, penned by Steve Orlando and illustrated by Álvaro López, Laura Braga, Antonio Fabela, and Joe Caramagna, a squad of Imperials, accompanied by mercenaries and led by General Tern Koyatta, embarks on a mission to locate a secret weapons depot on Endor. As part of their plan, they capture Wicket W. Warrick, a bilingual Ewok from his village, enlisting him as their reluctant guide. During their journey, the group encounters a vast body of water that Wicket ominously names the Endless Lake.
Despite Wicket’s dire warning about the dangers lurking in the lake, the group chooses to press on. His caution points to the existence of an Ewok tribe that once inhabited the vicinity of this lake, enriching the lore surrounding the Ewoks.
Marvel’s Star Wars Comics Officially Broaden Ewok Lore
The Endless Lake: A Former Ewok Stronghold
Wicket recounts how the Endless Lake was once a thriving Ewok village before its tragic demise. This village fell to the aquatic menace Orcon, the king of the underwater realm, who submerged it, claiming the lake as his territory. The remnants of the village now serve as a cautionary tale among the Ewoks, known as the desolation of King Orcon. Following this event, Orcon transformed the lake into a breeding ground for his monstrous serpents, rendering the water perilous.
The implications of a former semi-aquatic Ewok community suggest the potential existence of various tribes, each uniquely adapted to Endor’s diverse ecosystems. This adds a new layer to the already rich tapestry of Ewok culture.
Despite Wicket’s warnings, General Koyatta dismisses the risks and orders his group to navigate the lake in a makeshift vessel. This reckless decision leads to chaos when they are attacked by Orcon’s devil serpents, capsizing their boat and scattering the group. Among them, an aged droid head named Ee-Exsevenseven is lost to the depths. In a heroic act, Wicket manages to swim through the tumultuous waters to rescue Exsev, though he can save only one due to the dangers surrounding them.
What Other Ewok Tribes May Be Hidden in Star Wars Lore?
The Existence of a Water Tribe and Potential More on Endor
While Wicket successfully navigates the lake to aid Exsev, his background in Bright Tree Village underscores his adaptation to treetop living. This raises intriguing questions about the evolutionary traits that may have allowed certain Ewoks to thrive in aquatic environments. Possible adaptations could include features such as waterproof fur, webbed appendages, or enhanced swimming capabilities.
Considering the possibility of a semi-aquatic tribe at Endless Lake, one can speculate about the presence of other diverse groups across Endor. Perhaps tribes of Ewoks could exist in less forested areas, constructing burrows or underground dwellings, or even ascend into the mountainous regions to create communities in caves or stone structures. This adaptability suggests a remarkable potential for Ewoks to explore and inhabit various environments throughout the Star Wars galaxy.
