Star Citizen Set for 2027/2028 Launch; Chris Roberts Describes Squadron 42 as ‘Top Gun Meets Star Wars’ with Expectations for GTA 6-Inspired Event

Star Citizen Update: New Insights into Release Timelines

For over a decade, Chris Roberts, the visionary creator behind Star Citizen, has refrained from providing precise release dates for his groundbreaking multiplayer online space simulation game. However, recent developments signal a shift, as Canadian news outlet LaPresse published an interview revealing that the game is now anticipated to launch in either 2027 or 2028.

Approaching a Milestone in Early Access History

Star Citizen’s early access phase, particularly for its persistent universe module, began on December 23, 2017. If the game launches as projected, this early access period will stretch nearly a decade, potentially surpassing the previous record held by the survival horror game 7 Days to Die, which has been in early access since December 13, 2013, until its official version release on July 25, 2024.

Squadron 42: A Highly Anticipated Chapter

Currently in Alpha 4.3.0, Star Citizen will be preceded by its single-player campaign, Squadron 42. During last year’s CitizenCon, Cloud Imperium Games announced plans for this campaign to debut in 2026. Chris Roberts conveyed aspirations that its launch would garner excitement comparable to that of Rockstar’s forthcoming Grand Theft Auto VI, describing Squadron 42 as a daring blend of Top Gun and Star Wars.

We’re hoping it’ll be almost as big an event. Other than GTA 6, it’s probably the biggest-budget AAA game. It’s Top Gun meets Star Wars.

A Star-Studded Cast

Squadron 42 features a prominent ensemble of Hollywood actors, who have lent their voices and likenesses to the game, undoubtedly in exchange for significant compensation. The impressive cast includes:

  • Gary Oldman
  • Mark Hamill
  • Gillian Anderson
  • Mark Strong
  • Liam Cunningham
  • Andy Serkis
  • John Rhys-Davies
  • Jack Huston
  • Eleanor Tomlinson
  • Harry Treadaway
  • Sophie Wu
  • Damson Idris
  • Eric Wareheim
  • Rhona Mitra
  • Henry Cavill
  • Ben Mendelsohn

Will It Live Up to Expectations?

The question on everyone’s mind, especially considering the staggering investment of $858 million and counting, is whether Star Citizen and Squadron 42 will meet the soaring expectations of their dedicated fanbase after such an extended wait.
