
Challenges Mount for Cloud Imperium Games as Key Staff Depart
A recent report by Insider Gaming has shed light on ongoing difficulties at Cloud Imperium Games (CIG).The studio faces significant setbacks following the exit of crucial personnel involved in server meshing, alongside additional layoffs across various departments. This situation compounds an already tumultuous chapter for the studio.
Exodus of Key Personnel Signals Trouble
Among the notable departures is Roger Godfrey, who left in December 2024, followed by key figures Ivan Corbett and Jordan Wood. With these exits, CIG is now devoid of any producers specifically focusing on server meshing. Insiders described their departure as a substantial blow to the project, emphasizing the skills and expertise lost in the transition.
A History of Struggles for Star Citizen
The departure of staff is just the latest incident amid a series of challenges facing Star Citizen. In 2024, CIG experienced a wave of layoffs in both February and November, raising concerns about the stability and direction of the development team. Reports from that time indicated a troubling internal landscape where developers were overloaded with tasks unrelated to the completion of Star Citizen, which has remained in early access since its inception in 2012.
Player Backlash Over ‘Pay-to-Win’ Mechanics
Adding to the studio’s woes, CIG has faced intense criticism from the gaming community regarding its recent introduction of ‘pay-to-win’ mechanics through the Flight Blades feature. The backlash from players reached a tipping point, prompting CIG to acknowledge their missteps. The company announced that in a forthcoming June update, players would be able to obtain Flight Blades using in-game currency, rather than solely through real money transactions.
“The choice has and should always be yours. If you want to support the project early, you can, but it’s not required. If you own a game package, you’ll be able to pick these up with in-game currency in our next monthly patch. And for future gameplay kit introductions, we’ll ensure these items are obtainable in-game on day one, ”CIG stated in their official announcement.
In their response to the community, CIG thanked players for their feedback, acknowledging that the success of Star Citizen heavily relies on community involvement. Despite this assurance, many players remained skeptical, alleging that the studio’s prior plan was to induce purchases through fear of missing out (FOMO) before later offering the items as in-game content.

As Cloud Imperium Games navigates these challenges, the impact on the future of Star Citizen remains uncertain.
