Overview of Recent Reactions to Lee Jung-jae’s Appearance
- Fans were taken aback by an unedited image of Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae, sparking discussions about aging in the entertainment sector.
- While some followers defended the actor, others expressed criticism regarding the changes in his appearance.
- The fervent reactions suggest a disconnect between public expectations of celebrities and the realities of natural aging, exacerbated by the effects of makeup and lighting.
South Korean celebrities, renowned for their youthful appearances, often receive accolades for looking much younger than their actual years. This phenomenon was recently highlighted when fans reacted in shock to an unaltered photo of Lee Jung-jae, a prominent lead in the hit series Squid Game.
Launched on Netflix in 2021, Squid Game quickly became a cultural phenomenon, leading to its continuation with two additional seasons. The eagerly awaited Season 2 premiered on December 26, 2024. At its premiere event in Los Angeles, Lee Jung-jae drew attention due to a circulating unedited image that many insisted revealed signs of aging that they hadn’t noticed before.
Cast members, including Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Jo Yu-ri, were present at the premiere. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, a user captured a screenshot of Jung-jae that fueled further discussion online regarding his apparent aging. A comment on X (formerly Twitter) mentioned, “Knets shocked with Korean dramas and movies editing after seeing [an] unedited video of Lee Jungjae on the Netflix red carpet.” This post garnered widespread attention and reactions, as fans noted the actor appeared significantly older compared to his on-screen persona.

However, many fans came to Jung-jae’s defense, pointing out that at 52 years old, it’s natural for him to exhibit signs of aging. Some viewers remarked that he actually appeared youthful for his age. They argued that variations in lighting during the red carpet event accentuated his features differently than in the series. Others noted that heavy makeup might have contributed to an older appearance, while one user celebrated the actor’s natural look, stating, “Confirm he didn’t have plastic surgery [and] that’s his natural face. Unlike other Korean celebrities, their faces are plastic surgery lol.”
The timeline between Squid Game Seasons 1 and 2—spanning just three years—indicated shifts in Jung-jae’s look. Users also shared side-by-side comparisons showing stark contrasts in expressions: his character Gi-hun was optimistic and cheerful during the original tournament but developed a more somber and vengeful demeanor by the new season.

Clearly, Jung-jae’s evolving appearance over the years is anticipated; aging is a natural process that occurs for everyone. The criticism he faced underscores a broader societal expectation that celebrities must maintain flawless images at all times, particularly under public scrutiny. Nonetheless, factors like makeup choices and venue lighting can strongly influence how individuals are perceived at significant events.
Squid Game Season 2 is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
