For fans eagerly awaiting the second season, it is set to debut on December 26, 2024. Instead, he chooses to reveal the identities of the individuals behind the deadly games that claimed numerous lives.

Insights from Director Hwang Dong-hyuk on Upcoming Seasons

At a recent For Your Consideration awards gathering in Los Angeles, Hwang shared intriguing insights into what fans can expect from the evolving narrative of Squid Game. He disclosed that the initial creation of season one did not include any concrete plans for a sequel, stating that he felt significant pressure due to the immense expectations from the audience.

“Of course I felt a certain amount of pressure because I knew that there was a huge amount of anticipation out there. Honestly, when I was creating season one, I didn’t plan in detail for a second season, but I did have a general storyline in mind.”

Hwang emphasized that both season 2 and season 3 will plot the journey of the protagonist, Gi-hun, portrayed by Lee Jung-jae, as he re-engages with the deadly competition that once devastated many lives. The narrative will explore Gi-hun’s return, aimed at dismantling the sinister games from within.

The director elaborated on how Gi-hun’s experiences have transformed him, explaining the notable character development between the seasons. According to Hwang, as translated by The Hollywood Reporter:

“Gi-hun has experienced too many things, witnessed too many deaths for him to return to the way it was before, no matter how hard he tries. The way you see Gi-hun in season one and the state that you see him in season two are very different.”

Additionally, Hwang provided insights into the editing process for the much-anticipated season three, revealing that it has already been completed. He reflected on the clarity he found in envisioning the conclusion of the series:

“When I was thinking about the idea for the ending of season three, I believed that with that story, I could tell everything I wanted to express through the storyline of Squid Game and from Gi-hun’s perspective, without needing further developments.”

Squid Game season 3 is expected to premiere in 2025, continuing to captivate audiences worldwide.
