Director and showrunner of Squid Game, Hwang Dong Hyuk, has openly addressed the recent controversy surrounding actor Park Sung Hoon, who stars as a transgender woman in the series’ latest season. This incident sparked when Park inadvertently posted a pornographic parody of a promotional image from the show on Instagram.
Initially, Park claimed it was an accidental upload, suggesting that he had mistakenly shared the image instead of sending it privately to a manager. However, he later admitted to misleading both fans and the media about the nature of the upload.
Director Hwang’s Reaction
In a candid interview with Xport News, Hwang expressed his confusion and disapproval regarding Park’s actions. He stated, “As far as I know, something like that came out overseas in Season 1. In the past, that happened whenever a famous work came out, right? It’s unpleasant. It’s a story that completely destroys the meaning of the work itself.”His comments reflect a deep concern about how such incidents can tarnish the integrity of a widely acclaimed piece of art.
Hwang further elaborated on his communication, or lack thereof, with Park regarding the situation. “I haven’t talked to Sung Hoon about that issue. I think someone sent it to him, but I haven’t heard how he ended up uploading it. Actually, I want to know, too. Why did he make such a mistake?”
Agency’s Statement and Aftermath
The controversial post, which was uploaded on December 30, was swiftly removed, but not before it garnered significant attention. In response to the unfolding situation, Park’s agency released a statement suggesting that the actor inadvertently pressed the wrong button while managing his numerous direct messages. “The actor himself was very surprised and is reflecting on it. We will work hard to make sure something like this never happens again,” the agency assured.
