Transformers: Reactivate Development Halted by Splash Damage
As the new year unfolds, it brings disappointing news for fans of the Transformers franchise. Splash Damage has announced on X the termination of the highly anticipated game, Transformers: Reactivate. This decision is accompanied by a restructuring phase within the studio, leading to potential layoffs amid a shift in focus towards other ongoing projects.
Overview of Transformers: Reactivate
Initially unveiled in December 2022, Transformers: Reactivate aimed to deliver an exciting 1-4 player online action experience across PC and console platforms. Players were to engage in the unique challenge of reassembling Autobots from the scattered debris of cityscapes, a concept developed in partnership with Hasbro, Inc. The cinematic trailer generated considerable excitement among the Transformers fandom, showcasing the potential of the title.
Splash Damage’s Official Statement
Today, we have some very difficult news to share, the decision has been made to end the development of Transformers: Reactivate.
This means we will be scaling down to refocus our efforts on other projects. Unfortunately, despite every effort, a number of roles across the studio are now potentially at risk of redundancy.
This decision did not come lightly, and it is a difficult time for the studio and our people. We want to take a moment to thank the team who worked on Transformers for their dedication and passion.
Hasbro was an incredible and supportive partner throughout, and we hope to work with them again. To the many fans, your excitement and support helped keep us going.
While not being able to see the game through to release is painful, having to say goodbye to friends and colleagues hurts even more. We’re now focused on doing everything we can to support them through this tough period, just as we are committed to caring for those who will stay with us as we build a stronger Splash Damage for the future.
Thank you for your compassion and understanding.
Looking Ahead: Project Astrid
Despite the setback with Transformers: Reactivate, Splash Damage remains committed to innovation. In March 2023, they announced the development of a new endeavor titled Project Astrid, an open-world survival game created in collaboration with well-known streamers Shroud and Sacriel. There is hope that the talented individuals who were part of the Transformers project might transition to work on Project Astrid, ensuring their skills contribute to this new venture.
As the studio navigates this challenging transformation, it will be crucial to support both affected staff and those remaining, fostering an environment for sustainable growth and creativity at Splash Damage.
