Over time, the Windows context menu, commonly known as the right-click menu, can become sluggish, turning from a useful tool into a frustrating hurdle to productivity. Fortunately, there are several strategies you can employ to alleviate this issue and restore efficiency to your right-click function. Below are effective methods to declutter your context menu and enhance its responsiveness.
1. Clear File Explorer History to Eliminate Excess Cache
Interestingly, a buildup in your File Explorer history can directly contribute to delays in your context menu. Each time you right-click, Windows gathers data pertaining to “Open with”suggestions and “Recent”files, which can bog down performance if the history is overloaded or corrupted. To address this, you can quickly clear your File Explorer history.
Simply launch File Explorer, click the three-dot menu located at the top, and choose Options. Under the General tab, click on Clear next to the Clear File Explorer history option. This action resets your recent activities and may significantly speed up your context menu, provided this was the underlying issue.

2. Remove Unnecessary Context Menu Items
Various third-party applications often add their entries to your context menu for convenient access. However, an overflow of these entries or a malfunctioning app can contribute to context menu slowdowns. To enhance performance, consider disabling some of these items.
One effective tool for this is ShellExView, which can display third-party context menu entries and allow you to disable them. After launching the tool, click on Options and select Hide All Microsoft Extensions. This option will hide built-in Windows extensions and reveal third-party entries.

To disable clutter, right-click on the displayed entries and choose Disable Selected Items. Restarting File Explorer or your PC will apply these changes. If this enhances the speed of your context menu, proceed to re-enable entries one at a time to identify the specific culprit.

3. Investigate “Ghost” Network Drives Causing Delay
In instances where the context menu takes significantly longer—over five seconds—to appear, a “ghost”network drive might be the issue. If your PC attempts to connect to a network drive, such as a NAS, that is offline or unreachable, this can stall the context menu as Windows waits to access it. Ensuring stable connectivity to the drive can resolve this issue.
If you no longer need a particular drive, open This PC, right-click on the drive, and select Disconnect to eliminate the delay.
4. Disable Visual Effects for Improved Responsiveness
If you find the slower animations of Windows 11’s context menu bothersome, you can modify these settings for a snappier experience. Disabling certain visual effects not only enhances the responsiveness of the context menu but may also improve overall system performance, particularly on older hardware.
To adjust these settings, type “adjust performance” in the Windows Search bar and open Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows. Uncheck the following effects for quicker menu access:
- Fade or slide menus into view
- Fade or slide ToolTips into view
- Fade out menu items after clicking
- Animate controls and elements inside windows

Be aware that disabling these effects also impacts other visual components across Windows. On older systems, you may also consider turning off transparency effects for further performance gains.
5. Utilize the Classic Context Menu
While Windows 11 introduces a more modern-looking context menu compared to its predecessor, it may feel slower for some users. You can immediately test this by pressing the Shift key while right-clicking an item, which will bring up the classic context menu, typically offering a quicker response.

If you prefer the classic menu for its speed, you can either use the Shift key method each time or permanently switch back through a Registry modification.
By implementing these adjustments, your Windows context menu should perform with far greater speed and efficiency. Say goodbye to sluggish right-clicks and hello to productivity!
