Skull and Bones is set to celebrate its anniversary with a special event starting on February 18. Marking a long-awaited launch, the pirate-themed action-adventure game finally made its debut in early 2024 after several years of development. Originally announced in 2017, development started in 2013 but was plagued by various delays. Despite generating substantial hype prior to its release, many fans felt that the game ultimately did not meet Ubisoft’s ambitious expectations.
In the lead-up to its launch, Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot had heightened excitement by describing Skull and Bones as a Quadruple-A title. However, following its release, many players found its graphics and gameplay did not live up to this bold claim. The game joins a list of recent disappointing high-budget releases from Ubisoft, including Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws. Despite the challenges, the game retains a dedicated player base, particularly among ship simulator enthusiasts. The upcoming anniversary event indicates that Ubisoft remains committed to its swashbuckling venture.

- Event Start Date: February 18, 2025

During The Founding event, players will have the opportunity to exchange Sovereigns for a new currency, Silver Lions, or earn them by completing designated activities. These Silver Lions can be spent in a special celebration store that offers an array of rewards, such as weapons and cosmetics, including an exclusive Illustrious Founding set. Additionally, Ubisoft will unveil the Year 1 soundtrack on major streaming platforms starting March 6, further enriching the gaming experience.

While many were skeptical about the prospect of Year 2 content for Skull and Bones, given its mixed reviews and low player engagement, such support could signify Ubisoft’s commitment to enhancing the game. Players have voiced concerns regarding the title’s superficiality and limited content, yet signs of additional development may suggest that the company is determined to improve player experience.
Meanwhile, the rumored remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag could draw attention away from further Year 2 content for Skull and Bones. Initially designed as a Black Flag expansion, the project eventually morphed into a standalone title, potentially leading fans to prioritize the remake over additional updates for Skull and Bones. Regardless of the future, the imminent anniversary event promises a wealth of rewards for players eager to celebrate.
