Space Marine 2 Buffs Weapons and Reverts Difficulty Changes After Player Feedback
Recently, Saber Interactive, the team behind Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, rolled out its first significant update for the game. This update introduced a new Operation map alongside a fresh difficulty setting, in addition to numerous balance adjustments designed to enhance the challenge posed by the Tyranid forces, which players were swiftly overcoming.
While the community generally embraced the new features of Patch 4.0, the balance adjustments faced considerable backlash, leading many players to engage in review-bombing the title on Steam. In response, the development team has announced that a new update will be released shortly, featuring rollbacks and adjustments aimed at returning control to the players.
“Regardless of the differing opinions, we genuinely appreciate your enthusiasm for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2,”stated Game Director Dmitriy Grigorenko. “The primary lesson for me is recognizing that once a game is released, it shifts from being a developer’s creation to becoming yours to enjoy.”
In an effort to prevent future updates from surprising either players or the developers, Saber plans to introduce a public test server program. This initiative will allow selected community members to preview modifications before they are made available to the wider audience, with the program expected to launch in early 2025.
According to Saber, the most challenging difficulty level available at the game’s initial launch, Ruthless, had a win rate of 60% in September. However, subsequent updates boosted that win rate to over 80%, prompting feedback that the game was becoming too accessible. This resulted in the recent modifications that increased enemy spawn rates across all difficulty settings, which contributed to widespread negative responses.
“Your feedback has clearly indicated that the game became more demanding and stressful at lower difficulty levels, which was never our intention,”Grigorenko remarked. “As I’ve repeatedly stressed in interviews, Space Marine 2 is fundamentally about fulfilling power fantasies, and Patch 4.0 has detracted from that experience for many players.”
The upcoming update will also include significant enhancements to all Bolter weapon types used in Operations, the removal of the Tight Formation requirement that kept players clustered together, improved armor on Ruthless difficulty, and various other changes.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Patch 4.1 is scheduled to release on Thursday, October 24, across all platforms. For a detailed list of changes, check out the full changelog here.
