Enthusiasts looking to experience the game early can opt for the Premium Edition available for pre-order.
This thrilling action adventure, steeped in a Southern Gothic atmosphere, was first unveiled during the Xbox Games Showcase in mid-June 2023. Developed by Compulsion Games, a Canadian studio known for their earlier titles, such as the 2013 puzzle platformer Contrast and the 2018 immersive sim We Happy Few, South of Midnight marks their third major venture.
After nearly five years in development, the official release date was confirmed at the 2025 Xbox Developer Direct event. During this presentation on January 23, Compulsion Games showcased a captivating three-minute trailer that not only hinted at South of Midnight’s narrative but also highlighted its intriguing Southern Gothic backdrop.
Affordable Pre-Orders for South of Midnight Now Available
With the announcement of the release date, pre-orders for South of Midnight have officially launched. Gamers can secure their copy via Steam and the Xbox Store. Surprisingly, the base edition is priced at an economical $39.99, defying the common trend of many new titles being priced at $59.99 or $69.99. Interestingly, this pricing strategy aligns with the trend seen during the Xbox Developer Direct 2025 event, which also showcased the competitively priced title Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 at $49.99.

Discover the Premium Edition of South of Midnight
The Premium Edition of South of Midnight, available for $49.99, offers an immersive package that includes a digital artbook, soundtrack, and the comic book The Boo-Hag by Rob Guillory. This edition also features complementary content such as a music video and a documentary, along with five days of early access, allowing players to delve into the game on April 3. For subscribers of PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, a $10 Premium Edition Upgrade ensures they can enjoy this early experience.
Notably, Compulsion Games has estimated that the gameplay experience will last approximately 12 hours, a factor possibly contributing to its attractive pricing. During the Xbox Developer Direct 2025, other games were highlighted as well, such as Doom: The Dark Ages and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which were assigned release dates of May 15 and April 24, respectively. In addition, Microsoft’s showcase spotlighted Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, the latter being shadow-dropped for the Xbox Game Pass subscribers.
