Not many video games draw from the rich cultural tapestry of the American Deep South, making South of Midnight a noteworthy addition to the genre. Centered around Hazel, an ordinary woman transformed into a magical “Weaver, ”the game invites players to explore a fantastical world. Here, she can create objects from thin air and employ various intriguing abilities related to the theme of weaving, all while encountering an array of eccentric creatures inspired by southern folklore.
During my experience with Chapter 3, Hazel was equipped with a distaff and hooks. These tools allow her to engage in combat against the Haints, enigmatic and demonic entities that players must confront. Although the combat mechanics are not groundbreaking, they fulfill their purpose effectively; Hazel’s distinctive skills inject a layer of complexity into the action. Right from this early stage, Hazel possesses abilities such as freezing foes, pulling them closer, and launching them away through a “strand push”maneuver. Each ability features cooldown timers, emphasizing the need for strategic usage.
Outside of utilizing Hazel’s supernatural skills, combat typically involves rapid button mashing – primarily using the X button for attacks and B for dodging. While the mechanics are straightforward, they remain engaging, and early previews suggest the combat system will evolve as players progress. In her journey, Hazel can gather a currency known as “floofs, ”which can be exchanged for new abilities or enhancements. Though the skill tree in South of Midnight may be smaller in scale compared to others in the gaming landscape, it still wields considerable influence. With a sufficient amount of floofs at my disposal, I selected upgrades that included a ground pound ability to bolster my combat against the Haints.
Innovative Platforming Techniques in South of Midnight

Chapter 3 also sees a significant enhancement in Hazel’s traversal skills as she encounters a family of “ghosts”who provide guidance on overcoming various obstacles. By this chapter’s conclusion, Hazel gains the ability to double jump, glide, and even run along walls. To navigate the environment effectively, some platforms and walls need to be solidified using her unique abilities, creating a more dynamic gameplay experience. The platforming mechanics in South of Midnight are enjoyable and seem poised to expand with more tools in upcoming chapters.
Hazel’s abilities come into full play as she dodges spike traps and swamp hazards in pursuit of the chapter’s main objective: liberating a giant talking catfish from a colossal tree giant. This quest leads her to Rhubarb, a man who guards a bottle tree. Armed with the bottle, Hazel embarks on a hunt for mystical materials to rescue the fish, engaging in numerous battles throughout the swamp. The narrative is enriched with echoes that detail the backstories of Rhubarb and his tragic brother Benjy, intertwining their tales without overshadowing the gameplay.
The intertwining stories of the fish, Rhubarb, Benjy, and the ghostly characters showcase South of Midnight’s compelling narrative structure. Each subplot enhances the gaming experience without interrupting the overall action. Cutscenes are well-timed, ensuring that the focus remains on platforming, exploration, and combat. The game excels in incorporating southern folklore in ways that feel both fresh and immersive, setting it apart from other titles.
Encouraging Exploration in South of Midnight

While South of Midnight largely presents linear narratives, Chapter 3 features a level design that offers more exploration than it first appears. During my playtime, I accidentally stumbled upon a side path that led to additional floofs, inspiring me to thoroughly investigate the rest of the area. If subsequent chapters mirror this exploratory quality, players can genuinely expect rewards for taking their time.
After exploring extensively, I resumed the story, culminating in a thrilling chase scene and an ascent up the giant tree, all while accompanied by an outstanding musical score that captures the essence of southern folklore and enhances the narrative experience. This music, coupled with the game’s stop-motion art style, creates an enchanting atmosphere that distinguishes South of Midnight in a crowded gaming market.
Although my engagement was limited to a single chapter, South of Midnight left a lasting impression across multiple facets. The harmonious integration of music, visuals, and storytelling results in a captivating presentation, bolstered by enjoyable combat and platforming elements. As it stands, South of Midnight may not yet be drawing the same level of attention as other major titles set for release on Xbox Game Pass in 2025, but it possesses the potential to emerge as one of the year’s hidden gems, provided that the quality established in Chapter 3 persists. I’m eager to see the next phase of Hazel’s adventure.
