Tomb Raider TV Series: Filming Set for 2026 with Sophie Turner as Lara Croft
The much-anticipated Tomb Raider television series, inspired by the acclaimed portrayal of Lara Croft by Crystal Dynamics, is officially slated to commence filming in 2026. This exciting development comes via a report from Variety, confirming that actress Sophie Turner will take on the iconic role.
Creative Talent Behind the Series
Originally announced in May 2024, this project boasts the involvement of award-winning writer and producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who will serve as the showrunner. Waller-Bridge’s vision extends beyond the TV series, linking it to a larger, integrated Tomb Raider universe that Amazon is diligently crafting, which encompasses video games, television series, and films developed by Crystal Dynamics.
Excitement from Michael Turner and Waller-Bridge
“I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team, ”Waller-Bridge expressed.“It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming…”
Turner, sharing her enthusiasm for the role, remarked, “She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”
Challenges Facing Crystal Dynamics
While news about the Tomb Raider series brings optimism, recent developments at Crystal Dynamics unveil a more somber narrative. The studio announced layoffs just last week. Although they assured that the production of the upcoming Tomb Raider game would remain “unaffected, ”the ripple effects of layoffs can significantly impact morale and focus within a development team.
As the filming progresses and the series nears its anticipated debut, fans eagerly await more updates and hope for a seamless integration into the expanding Tomb Raider universe.
