Sophie Turner on Amazon’s Tomb Raider TV Series: “My Lara Is Not Just a Sex Bombshell”

First Look at Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in Amazon’s New Series

Just over a week ago, Amazon provided Tomb Raider enthusiasts with an exciting first glimpse of Sophie Turner portraying Lara Croft in the much-anticipated TV series adaptation. The production has recently commenced principal photography, raising buzz among fans of the franchise.

Turner’s Perspective on Lara Croft

In a recent interview with the LA Times, held while promoting her current project, Steal, a limited six-episode series on Prime Video, Turner shared insights into her portrayal of the iconic adventurer. She emphasized that her focus is on Lara’s remarkable skill set, steering away from the hyper-sexualized representation often seen in the previous games and films featuring Angelina Jolie.

Reimagining Lara Croft

Turner expressed her determination to explore the depth of Lara’s character.“My Lara is not a sex bombshell. It’s about her journey and what motivates her, rather than her physical appeal, which has been a significant element in both the games and movies. I aim to showcase her unyielding abilities and confidence, ”she explained.

Intense Training for the Role

The actress, who broke into the limelight as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones and also portrayed Jean Grey in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, revealed that the preparation for her role as Lara Croft has been unlike anything she has experienced before.“I’ve never had to train for anything like this previously. While in ‘X-Men’, we maintained good fitness levels, my character’s telekinetic powers meant I wasn’t required to undergo intense physical training. With Lara, I discovered just how far I could push my physical limits, ”Turner shared.“I feel a sense of accomplishment even before the shooting begins.”

Evolution of the Tomb Raider Franchise

Interestingly, the most recent trilogy of Tomb Raider games began to shift away from the emphasis on Lara Croft’s once-significant sexuality. This trend raises questions about whether the upcoming game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, currently in development at Crystal Dynamics and set for release in 2027, will continue along this path.

Turner’s adaptation of Lara Croft could signify a significant transformation in how female characters are portrayed in action-adventure narratives, focusing more on their capabilities and stories rather than their physical allure.
