Sony Introduces Exciting Update for DualSense Controller
Sony has officially revealed an innovative update targeting PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro users enrolled in the PS5 Beta program. This forthcoming update, slated for rollout tomorrow, promises to enhance the experience of connecting the DualSense controller to multiple devices, making the process notably “seamless.”
Streamlined Device Switching
As detailed in the PlayStation Blog, once a user has initially paired their DualSense or DualSense Edge controller with various devices—such as a PS5, PC, and mobile phone—they will have the ability to effortlessly switch between these devices. This is achieved through a combination of the PS button and specific face buttons.
“With this update, you can now register up to four devices simultaneously, and easily switch between them directly from your controller, ”states Shuzo Kikuchi, Vice President of Product Management at Sony.“For example, you can take your controller which you use with your PS5, then seamlessly switch connection to a PC to play PC games, or connect it to a smartphone to enjoy Remote Play from your PS5. With this enhanced flexibility, you can enjoy gaming more freely across multiple devices.”
After pairing your controller to the desired devices initially, you can use the prescribed button presses shown in the example chart below to switch from one device to another smoothly.
Device Pairing Example
Slot Number | Button Config | Player Indicator Lights | Connected Device |
Slot 1 | PS button + Triangle button | One light on | PS5 |
Slot 2 | PS button + Circle button | Two lights on | PS5 Pro |
Slot 3 | PS button + Cross button | Three lights on | Windows PC |
Slot 4 | PS button + Square button | Four lights on | iPhone |
Future Updates: Power-Saving Mode
An additional key aspect mentioned in the blog post pertains to a forthcoming feature, although not included in the impending update—this is a power-saving mode. Set to launch in a future update, this mode aims to reduce the console’s energy consumption while playing games that support it. For instance, if you’re playing a game like *Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart* that takes advantage of this new feature, your PS5/PS5 Pro will operate at lower power, resulting in a scaled-back performance and the disabling of VR capabilities for compatible games. The primary goal is to minimize the environmental footprint when using the console at full capacity.
Balancing Performance with Environmental Considerations
While gamers who prioritize high frame rates and advanced graphical settings, such as ray tracing, may be less likely to engage this mode, it nevertheless presents a compelling option for playing less demanding titles. This can significantly contribute to both reduced environmental impact and potential savings on electricity bills, especially for games that feature pixel-art graphics and do not necessitate extensive graphical fidelity.
At this moment, it remains to be seen which games will support this power-saving mode and the specifics surrounding its implementation.
