Overview of Sony and Kadokawa’s Collaboration
- Sony is set to provide financial support and publishing assistance for upcoming projects from Kadokawa, the parent company of FromSoftware.
- This partnership aims to accelerate the development and release of new intellectual properties across gaming, film, and television.
- It remains uncertain if future games from Kadokawa will feature PlayStation branding or become exclusive to the console.
FromSoftware, renowned for blockbuster titles like Elden Ring and the Dark Souls series, is under the umbrella of Kadokawa, which has recently announced a significant collaboration with Sony. This partnership indicates a strong commitment to innovation in gaming by leveraging Sony’s extensive resources.
Rumors of a potential acquisition of Kadokawa by Sony began circulating in November 2024. While Kadokawa’s thriving anime sector drew significant interest, gaming enthusiasts were particularly excited about the potential addition of several game studios to Sony’s first-party offerings. Kadokawa owns several notable brands including RPG Maker’s Gotcha Gotcha Games, Spike Chunsoft, known for Danganronpa, and Acquire, creators of the Tenchu series.
In December 2024, the speculation transitioned into reality when Sony and Kadokawa revealed a joint initiative. Sony invested $318 million, increasing its stake in Kadokawa to 10%, making it the largest shareholder. Both companies expressed enthusiasm about collaborating to enhance Kadokawa’s intellectual properties for a global audience. In their recent Q3 FY2025 earnings report, Kadokawa emphasized that the funding from Sony would expedite the development and distribution processes of new IPs across various media formats, including video games, films, and television shows.

Kadokawa outlined in their quarterly report that the partnership with Sony is enhancing both the quality and quantity of their video game development. The excitement surrounding FromSoftware’s forthcoming title, Elden Ring Nightreign, is palpable. Although Bandai Namco will handle its publication, the likelihood that future FromSoftware projects will receive financial backing from Sony cannot be ignored. The possibility of exclusivity on PlayStation consoles remains speculative; however, previous releases like Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin have been known to launch as timed exclusives for the PS5.

Moreover, considering the strong demand for FromSoftware games on PC platforms, Sony may opt for a broader distribution strategy rather than restricting new titles to PS5. Beyond the scope of FromSoftware, the collaboration also opens doors for Kadokawa’s other studios. For instance, Gotcha Gotcha Games is preparing to launch Action Game Maker for PC in June 2025, while Acquire and Spike Chunsoft are working on yet-to-be-announced projects.
