Ghost of Tsushima is poised for expansion beyond the gaming universe, as Sony has unveiled its plans to adapt the renowned video game into various entertainment formats. On September 24, 2024, as reported by the New York Times, Sucker Punch Productions announced a sequel set for release in 2025, titled Ghost of Yotei, along with news of a movie adaptation and additional spinoffs.
The original Ghost of Tsushima, released in 2020, is set against the backdrop of feudal Japan. The narrative follows Jin Sakai, a samurai who fights against the Mongol invasion of Tsushima Island during the 13th century. The game has received widespread acclaim for its historical accuracy, immersive gameplay, and stunning visuals, achieving over 13 million copies sold worldwide.
Sony’s Vision for Ghost of Tsushima
Sony’s strategy to adapt Ghost of Tsushima into multiple entertainment mediums reflects a growing trend within the gaming industry. The trend of video game adaptations has surged, and this announcement follows the success of adaptations like The Last of Us on HBO.
As Hermen Hulst, the chief executive of Sony’s studio business group, noted,
“We saw the same with ‘The Last of Us’ on HBO. From a business perspective, it makes a lot of sense. When a television series or movie is released, it inspires people to play again or encourage friends to join in.”
Ghost of Yotei, the forthcoming entry in the series, is also part of this overarching plan. Creative directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell, who were instrumental in the success of the first game, envision expanding the franchise across a variety of entertainment channels. When Ghost of Yotei launches on PlayStation 5 next year, Sony aims to leverage the robust fan base cultivated by the inaugural title.
Expanding the Franchise with Ghost of Tsushima
Ghost of Tsushima has already garnered a loyal following due to its rich ties to Japanese history and culture. This expansion into films and other media is likely to attract many new viewers, particularly those who appreciate historical dramas. Set in northern Japan, Ghost of Yotei features snowy battles, expansive landscapes, and introduces a new protagonist named Atsu.
The original Ghost of Tsushima game laid a solid foundation for future adaptations thanks in part to its cinematic presentation, heavily influenced by the works of legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, making it an ideal candidate for film development.
Since the release of the first game, Fox and Connell have been conceptualizing this expansion. The development team at Sucker Punch Productions undertook several research trips to Japan, ensuring the game’s historical accuracy and visual authenticity.
The initial trailer for the game highlights breathtaking landscapes, such as Mount Yotei, a prominent mountain in Japan’s Hokkaido region. The team visited over a dozen locations in Japan to gather inspiration for wildlife and natural scenery within the game, which can seamlessly translate into the upcoming film adaptation, enabling Sony to replicate the look and feel of the original game.
Connell expressed his awe, stating,
“I sat there for two hours just staring at the mountain. It was stunning.”
Fox also enjoyed capturing nature sounds for his audio team at Shiretoko National Park, located at the northeastern tip of Hokkaido. He recounted,
“Inside the park, you have to watch a video detailing the dangers of bears. Being in this incredibly beautiful park, with its jagged cliffs and water, while constantly being aware of the lurking dangers was electrifying.”
A Crowded Market
Other major franchises are also exploring the concept of feudal Japan around the same time as Sony’s endeavors. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series is expected to release a new title soon, and the TV show Shogun will depict Japan during the Tokugawa shogunate. However, Ghost of Tsushima offers a distinctive narrative, detailed world-building, and emotional richness.
Atsu, the new character in the upcoming Ghost of Yotei, navigates challenges in a dangerous and evolving world. The game is said to feature new gameplay mechanics, including the use of firearms and an enhanced focus on player choice.
Through these innovations, Sony intends to provide an original yet familiar experience that honors the legacy of the original game. As they release Ghost of Tsushima across various platforms, the title could establish itself as a flagship franchise. The recent successes of video game adaptations, combined with the devoted fanbase of Ghost of Tsushima, suggest that Sony’s ambitious plans are on track for success.
