Exciting Reveal: Housemarque’s New Game ‘Saros’
During the latest State of Play presentation, Sony surprised fans with the announcement of a new title from Housemarque, developers of the critically acclaimed Returnal. This new game, titled Saros, promises to maintain the captivating “return by death”mechanic that defined its predecessor.
A New Vision Following Returnal’s Success
Housemarque’s Creative Director, Gregory Louden, expressed enthusiasm about their new project: “After Returnal, we recognized that we had developed something truly special and award-winning. However, we wanted Returnal to stand as an independent experience.”This motivated the team to create a new intellectual property that enhances their signature third-person action and enigmatic storytelling.
Gameplay and Setting
In Saros, players assume the role of Arjun Devraj, portrayed by actor Rahul Kohli. Set on an off-world colony known as Carcosa, the game features an intriguing environment influenced by an unusual sun, which plays a critical role in the title’s death mechanics. However, fans can expect gameplay innovations that distinguish Saros from Returnal.
Permanent Progression and Evolving Gameplay
Louden elaborated on the unique aspects of the new gameplay, stating, “A significant gameplay difference is the inclusion of permanent resources and progression, ensuring that each death is meaningful.”Players will encounter a transformed world upon revival, but unlike before, they will have the capacity to select and upgrade their loadouts permanently. This dynamic allows for the customization of weapons and suit enhancements, enabling players to “come back stronger”to tackle the increasingly challenging encounters on Carcosa.
What’s Next for Housemarque?
As excitement builds for this new title, Housemarque has plans to share more insights in the upcoming months, including gameplay footage, development details, and the introduction of an “ensemble NPC cast.”Saros is set to launch on the PlayStation 5 sometime in 2026, marking another hopeful chapter for the acclaimed studio.
