Sony’s PlayStation Exclusives Now Require PSN Accounts for PC Players
Since 2020, Sony has made strides in bringing its popular PlayStation exclusive titles to the PC, starting with Horizon Zero Dawn. Recently, however, the introduction of a mandatory PlayStation Network (PSN) account has sparked considerable debate among the gaming community. Many PC gamers express frustration regarding this new requirement, especially since a number of regions are unable to purchase these titles entirely.
Insight from Sony’s Leadership
Throughout this transition, Sony has maintained a relatively low profile concerning the necessity for a PSN account. However, during a recent financial report Q&A session, Sony’s President, COO, and CFO, Hiroki Totoki, addressed these concerns. It’s worth noting that an interpreter was present during the session, which may have contributed to some of the awkward phrasing observed in his comments. Nevertheless, the essence of his statements sheds light on the company’s strategy.
“The PlayStation accounts that we have offered – well, actually, by offering them, for instance, sometimes that tends to invite pushback,”said Totoki. “But for the live service games, in order to maintain order of the gaming so that anybody can enjoy the games safely, we need to create an environment conducive to that and, of course, enjoying the game freely.”
Balancing Safety and Gaming Experience
In his statements, Totoki emphasized the importance of fostering a safe gaming environment through certain restrictions. He noted, “Having some restrictions, may not call it a rule, but to ask the users and gamers to follow the manner, those manners are very important and we have to continue to seek the best way to achieve this.”
Expanding the Requirements Beyond Live Service Games
Interestingly, while Totoki primarily referred to live service titles, such as Helldivers 2, there has been a trend of extending the PSN login requirement to single-player games as well. The recent PC port of God of War Ragnarök exemplifies this shift, alongside the anticipated release of Spider-Man 2, which will also necessitate a PSN account. Furthermore, with the launch of the remastered version of Horizon Zero Dawn, the original title was removed from stores, now requiring users to have a PSN account to access the remastered edition.
