‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ Review: A Bigger and Better Adventure Every Time

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, once struggling to find its footing, has evolved into a cherished classic within the gaming and cinematic realms. The latest installment, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, perfectly complements the beloved series.

In this new adventure, Sonic—voiced by Ben Schwartz—has welcomed his friends to live alongside him and his human guardians, Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter). Among his companions are Knuckles (Idris Elba) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey). However, trouble looms on the horizon as a new threat emerges in the form of Shadow, voiced by Keanu Reeves, pushing Team Sonic to confront their most formidable adversary yet.

Consistency remains a hallmark of the Sonic films, particularly in Sonic’s inherent empathy. His willingness to accept Knuckles into his circle exemplifies his nurturing nature, a trait that extends to his relationship with Shadow. In stark contrast, Shadow embodies a darker path; devoid of the joy and familial bonds that Sonic cherishes, he emerges as a product of his tormented past.

The film further explores the complexities of Dr. Robotnik—portrayed by Jim Carrey—who aligns with Shadow in a bid for power. Audiences are treated to a dual performance from Carrey, notably as Robotnik’s grandfather, which adds depth and intrigue to his character. Ultimately, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 shines through its ensemble of familiar characters, each contributing to the film’s vibrant dynamism.

This action-packed journey spans the globe, promising an exhilarating experience that will undoubtedly delight fans of the franchise.

A particularly touching scene in Jeff Fowler’s film features Sonic deeming their group as “Team Sonic,”highlighting a recurring theme of camaraderie that permeates the narrative. Knuckles’ comedic take on this designation emphasizes the profound bond shared between these heroes.

Who doesn’t love Team Sonic?

While prior knowledge of Knuckles may enhance understanding, it isn’t requisite to appreciate the evolution of Sonic and Knuckles’ relationship from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to this film. Their dynamic is akin to that of siblings, showcasing growth and kinship. As the franchise progresses, certain patterns become discernible—Sonic encounters a new character, conflicts arise, and ultimately, friendships blossom. Surprisingly, this familiar formula does not detract from the enjoyment of the story.

The familial themes resonate strongly, reminiscent of the Fast and the Furious franchise, as the characters continue to expand their circle of friends and allies. The introduction of Shadow not only satisfies long-standing fan requests but also reframes Sonic’s narrative, offering a fresh perspective. Shadow, visually defined by his black and red aesthetic, serves as a striking counterpart to Sonic’s traditional blue and white.

Despite my initial skepticism, Sonic the Hedgehog has adeptly tugged at my heartstrings. The franchise consistently delivers emotional moments, complementing the animated excitement of Sonic’s famous mantra: “gotta go fast.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 emerges as an excellent family film for the holiday season, particularly for fans who appreciate Knuckles’ endearing habit of misunderstanding his surroundings.
