Song Mino Concludes Police Interrogation Over Military Service Allegations

Rapper and songwriter Song Mino, a member of the popular band WINNER, has recently completed police questioning related to allegations of negligence during his mandatory military service. This inquiry has drawn significant attention from both fans and the media.

As reported by SBS, the interrogation took place at the Mapo Police Precinct in Seoul on January 23. The investigation centers on claims that Song took excessive sick leave while serving as a social service worker at a community center.

In addition to the sick leave allegations, Song has faced accusations of falsifying attendance records to mask his unauthorized absences. This situation raises serious ethical questions about accountability in public service roles.

During the approximately four-hour questioning, Song Mino firmly asserted that he had fulfilled all military obligations. Law enforcement officials scrutinized various pieces of evidence, including surveillance footage from the community center and interviews with Song’s supervisors, to assess whether he had been afforded preferential treatment compared to his peers.

Defending his actions, Song reiterated, “I properly fulfilled my service. There was no negligence, ”emphasizing that his absences were legitimate and excused on health grounds.

Details of His Military Service

Song Mino commenced his military service in March 2023 and is expected to be officially discharged on December 23, 2024. In South Korea, all able-bodied men are mandated to serve a minimum of 18 months in the military. Those who do not qualify for active duty typically serve a 21-month term as social service personnel, performing tasks in various public sectors, including government offices and public transport systems.

Ongoing Investigations and Public Scrutiny

Notably, Song is reported to have taken sick leave on the final day of his service. Following public outcry regarding the handling of military service among celebrities, the Military Manpower Administration initiated an investigation last month. Seoul’s Mayor, Oh Se Hoon, stated that the administration will thoroughly examine attendance records for social service workers impacted by this situation.

There is a possibility that authorities may conduct a second round of questioning if deemed necessary, reflecting the seriousness of the allegations and the administration’s commitment to transparency and fairness in military service.
