Solidigm has unveiled a groundbreaking external SSD that integrates direct-to-chip liquid cooling, which eliminates the need for traditional fans while enhancing thermal performance.

Leading enterprise data storage provider Solidigm has announced the launch of its latest innovation, the D7-PS1010 SSD in the E1. S form factor. This advanced storage solution features a pioneering cold plate for cooling, designed specifically for applications where standard airflow cooling is not feasible. The D7-PS1010 stands out as the world’s first SSD to utilize a cold plate mechanism, providing optimal cooling efficiencies while maintaining a compact footprint.

The D7-PS1010 employs direct-to-chip liquid cooling. This technology allows coolant to circulate through a plate that directly contacts the SSD chips, enabling effective cooling of both sides of the SSD without necessitating fans. For enterprise-class servers, such avant-garde cooling designs are crucial, especially when conventional fan systems are hindered by space constraints. Additionally, reducing the number of fans contributes to lower power consumption, addressing operational cost concerns effectively.

The introduction of the D7-PS1010 promises enhanced efficiency for servers without compromising thermal performance. The efficient nature of liquid cooling allows for the potential integration of additional GPUs or SSDs within each rack. Solidigm is particularly targeting applications involving AI and GPU-intensive processing, as well as hyperscale data centers that prioritize density, power efficiency, and space management. The compact E1. S form factor is well-suited for today’s server environments, and the elimination of extra cooling solutions further optimizes spatial utilization.

Available in thickness options of 9.5mm and 15mm, the D7-PS1010 SSD offers storage capacities of 3.84 TB and 7.68 TB. It also supports a PCIe 5.0 interface, claiming to deliver “best-in-class”performance in terms of storage capability when compared to other E1. S Gen 5 SSDs. Solidigm is actively partnering with various server ODMs and OEMs to ensure that these SSDs are included in the recommended vendor lists for enterprise solutions.
