Sofia Amorim loses battle against dengue fever
Despite being seven months into her pregnancy, Brazilian influencer Sofia Amorim continued to proudly flaunt her baby bump on social media, with her many followers offering their support and encouragement. However, on Friday, March 22, Amorim began feeling unwell, as reported by local Brazilian sources. In just a matter of days, everything took a tragic turn for both Amorim and her child.
According to a close friend of the influencer, who wished to remain unidentified, Sofia Amorim had reported experiencing difficulty breathing before being diagnosed with dengue. The friend was quoted in the Mirror as saying:
“She was very short of breath, so they thought it was anxiety. On Tuesday afternoon, they found out it was dengue and went to ‘listen’ to her lungs. They were full of water. At around 10 pm, they had to intubate her.”
“The tragedy took a turn for the worse when the friend revealed even more shocking information.”
“The baby had already died in her belly in the early hours of the morning, they didn’t deliver her immediately because her platelets were very low, and she could have lost too much blood. The cesarean section was the last resort to try to save her life.”
Sofia Amorim passed away at the age of 22 on Wednesday, March 27 in her hometown of Goiania, located in the Goias state of Brazil. She succumbed to multiple organ failure caused by dengue fever. Tragically, her child also did not survive.
Dengue fever is a significant health concern in extensive regions of South and Central America. According to the Goias State Department of Health, which oversees Amorim’s hometown, there has been a staggering 257 percent rise in reported cases of dengue fever compared to the previous year. As of current, there have been 72,747 registered cases.
The disease, which is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, is transmitted to humans through the bite of an Aedes aegypti mosquito that is carrying the infection. Symptoms of the illness typically appear 4-10 days after being bitten. These symptoms include a high fever, as well as flu-like symptoms such as nausea, headaches, rashes, joint/muscle/bone pain, swelling of the glands, and pain behind the eyes.
Although many people with dengue infection do not experience symptoms, for those who do, the symptoms typically resolve within a week. However, if symptoms persist, they may worsen dramatically and result in severe dengue, also known as dengue shock syndrome.
Severe dengue is a critical medical condition that can be fatal. It is caused by damage to the blood vessels and a decrease in the number of blood platelets. Common symptoms of severe dengue include persistent vomiting, bleeding from the gums or nose, presence of blood in urine, stool, or vomit, restlessness, fatigue, irritability, bruising under the skin, and rapid or labored breathing.
A serious case of dengue fever can result in internal bleeding, shock, failure of organs, and ultimately, death.
