“Societal Progress Still Needed”— Internet Supports Maya Henry, Condemns Hate Following Liam Payne’s Death

The shocking news of Liam Payne’s passing has sent ripples across the globe, leading netizens to rally in solidarity with his ex-fiancée, Maya Henry. Reports indicate that just days before his tragic demise, she had filed a cease-and-desist order against him. On October 16, 2024, the former One Direction star lost his life following an alleged fall from a balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires.

The couple had a tumultuous relationship from 2019 until their separation in 2022, with an engagement occurring in 2020. On October 6, Henry, a model originally from Texas, took to TikTok to express her concerns, stating that Payne had been obsessively attempting to contact her. Following this, on October 14, the Daily Mail reported that Henry’s legal representatives had been instructed to send a cease-and-desist letter to Payne due to his repeated outreach efforts to her and those close to her.

In the wake of Payne’s death, fans flocked to Maya’s social media accounts, directing blame towards her regarding the incident.

Users on the platform X (formerly Twitter) quickly supported Henry, one user remarked:

“Maya Henry has limited her Instagram comments because society continues to blame victims for speaking out about their abuse. None of this is her fault; we must do better.”

Many shared the sentiment that while Liam’s passing is undeniably tragic, those who have been victimized also deserve the right to discuss their experiences. Here are some notable reactions on X:

“Although his death is shocking and confusing, especially for his family, he was also an alleged abuser. His victims shouldn’t bear any blame for what transpired. Both can be true!”one user stated.

“To Maya Henry and every single woman who spoke out against Liam Payne, we are so proud of you for sharing your experiences with abuse. No logical person blames you for what happened,”another commented.

“Leave Maya Henry alone! She has every right to express her anger and discuss her truth, regardless of this tragedy,”@catluvr2008 remarked.

Others voiced strong disapproval of blaming Henry for the circumstances surrounding Payne’s death.

“They act as if Maya had any knowledge that he would die, like come on,”one user commented.

“If you blame Maya Henry for his death, you are truly disturbed!!!”another added.

“Sending all my support to Maya Henry, as people online have been quite cruel to her. Speaking out as a victim does not make her accountable for Liam’s fate,”one user expressed.

“Ever since we broke up, he messages me, blows up my phone”— Maya Henry on Liam Payne

Liam Payne and Maya Henry first sparked dating rumors in 2018 but only officially acknowledged their relationship in September 2019, when he was 26 and she was just 18. They became engaged in August 2020 but went through a brief breakup before reuniting, ultimately ending their relationship in May 2022.

Henry’s legal team elaborated on the cease-and-desist notice issued to the former 1D member, stating to the Daily Mail last week:

“She issued a cease and desist to Liam Payne last week due to the emergence of new and alarming information. She has engaged attorneys Marco Crawford and Daniel Cerna for representation. That is her sole statement at this time.”

This action followed her alarming TikTok post on October 6, where she described Payne’s incessant communication attempts. Henry stated:

“Since our breakup, he’s been messaging me repeatedly, creating chaos on my phone… It’s always from various phone numbers, and he emails from different accounts as well. He even contacts my mom. Is that behavior normal to you?”

According to an October 16 report from People, the singer felt “extremely overwhelmed by the legal complications”connected to Henry.

This year, Maya released her debut novel titled Looking Forward, which is said to draw parallels with her relationship with Liam Payne. The lead character, Mallory, aspires to be a model and gets romantically involved with Oliver, a former band member.

The story takes a dark turn when Mallory’s idyllic romance shifts as Oliver grapples with the frustration of a stagnant career, leading him to substance abuse and verbal assaults against her. The narrative tackles issues including abortion, eating disorders, and violence.

In May 2024, Henry told People that her book is “fiction”yet heavily influenced by her real-life experiences.

Liam Payne leaves behind his son, Bear Grey, whom he shares with singer Cheryl from Girls Aloud.
