Snoop Dogg Commends Chrisdeo’s Performance of Jason Mraz’s “I Won’t Give Up” on The Voice
The latest episode of The Voice season 26 featured a heartfelt performance that captured viewers’ attention. Chrisdeo, a talented 16-year-old from Queens, New York, delivered an emotional rendition during the Blind Auditions broadcast on Monday night.
Chrisdeo chose to sing I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz, dedicating the song to her mother. During her performance, both Snoop Dogg and Michael Bublé eagerly pressed their buttons to spin their chairs around.
Her moving interpretation of I Won’t Give Up resonated with the coaches, with Snoop Dogg being the first to respond.
The rapper expressed his admiration, stating,
“When I heard your first note, I knew to turn and hit that button. You are strong. You have a gift. And you’re young, so you still got time to grow and learn how to cry tears of happiness.”
The Voice: Chrisdeo broke down in tears when Michael Bublé turned his chair
Although Chrisdeo was overjoyed at Snoop Dogg’s reaction, she became overwhelmed with emotion when Michael Bublé turned his chair just as her performance concluded. Both Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani rose from their seats to console the teen with hugs.
Bublé humorously inquired if his chair turn was the reason behind her tears.
Chrisdeo mentioned her experiences as a street performer, facing mockery from passersby, and noted how she had never encountered anyone who was genuinely pleased to see her perform.
“I just started crying because I’m a street singer. People, like, laugh at me when I sing. And it’s just hard because… everybody was just so happy to see me, and I’ve never felt that before.”
In reflecting on Chrisdeo’s powerful performance, Bublé sympathized with her struggles, recalling his own days as a street performer.
Shared bubbles,
“I was a busker, too. At 16 or 17, I started playing in weird clubs where no one paid to see me. But I love that raw emotion I heard in you. I’m just so happy for you, kid.”
Moved by Chrisdeo’s heartfelt story, Reba McEntire offered her encouragement, stating,
“Next time those people say bad things to you on the street, just know that all the angels are around you listening to you doing what God gave you to do, and that sings with your beautiful voice.”
Chrisdeo’s journey reveals the challenges she faced while growing up in Queens. Raised by a single mother in a low-income housing project, she shared the difficulties of pursuing her passion for music amidst violence and negativity. As she detailed in a promo,
“There are shootings and gang activity around me, and when I play the piano in our apartment, my neighbor bangs on the wall.”
In the end, Chrisdeo chose Snoop Dogg as her coach, setting her up for what promises to be an exciting journey.
