In the most recent episode of Saturday Night Live (SNL), comedian Bowen Yang portrayed Moo Deng, the internet’s beloved pygmy hippopotamus. However, viewers were surprised when many pointed out that Yang seemed to mimic Chapell Roan during the sketch. In the skit, dressed as Moo Deng, Yang shared the character’s experiences, stating:
“For the past 10 weeks, I have been going nonstop. Running around, eating lettuce, trying to bite the water from a hose. The response has been overwhelming. But it has come to the point where I need to set some boundaries.”
As clips from the SNL segment surfaced online, reactions were mixed. Several social media users accused Bowen Yang of mocking Chapell Roan and her comments about her “creepy”and “weird”fans. User @PopCrave shared the video on X, prompting one user to respond:
“Two men mocking a woman’s mental health, real nice.”
Others echoed sentiments about how “unfunny” the SNL act was:
“Why is SNL still a thing… like it’s so beyond unfunny,” wrote one user on the platform.
“This is absolutely disgusting. Men are the worst,” added another.
“Wow, they are running out of ideas lol,” stated yet another user.
Meanwhile, several users speculated about Chapell Roan’s potential reaction to the sketch and the SNL cast’s parody of her:
“I wouldn’t be surprised if she made a TikTok video tomorrow addressing this,” exclaimed one user.
“They’re so weird considering she and her family have literally been stalked, which is why she asked people to stop harassing her and her close ones,” commented another user.
“Wouldn’t be surprised if she addresses this but also cancels her SNL appearance in a few weeks,” stated another.
“Y’all stop, she’s gonna cancel another 1-2 shows,” commented another user.
Exploring Details About Chapell Roan’s Experience with Misbehaving Fans Amid SNL’s Bowen Yang Mockery
Chapell Roan surprised fans with a video shared in late August 2024, where she spoke about experiencing harassment from fans. She criticized their “predatory behavior,” saying:
“If you saw a random woman on the street, would you yell at her from the car window? Would you harass her in public? Would you go up to a random lady and say, ‘Can I get a photo with you?’ and she’s like, ‘No, what the f*ck?’ And then you get mad at this random lady?”
She further emphasized:
“Please stop touching me. Please stop being weird to my family and friends. Please stop assuming things about me.”
For those unfamiliar, Moo Deng is a pygmy hippopotamus residing at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi, Thailand. The hippopotamus gained immense popularity in September 2024, after images of her at the zoo went viral.
This surge in interest has prompted various companies to create merchandise inspired by Moo Deng, along with influencers sharing makeup tutorials based on her look. Additionally, the BBC reported a significant increase in the zoo’s visitor numbers due to the popularity of Moo Deng.
As Chapell Roan’s comments about fan harassment continue to gain attention, the backlash over Saturday Night Live’s alleged parody of her has intensified. Currently, SNL has not confirmed whether the cast’s actions were indeed imitating the singer, and Roan has yet to respond to the situation.
