Microsoft Enhances Snipping Tool with GIF Support

This week marked a significant update for Windows 11’s native applications, including Paint, Notepad, and the Snipping Tool. Each of these applications has now integrated AI features designed to enhance user experience, such as generating stickers, capturing flawless screenshots, and drafting text. However, Microsoft’s upcoming enhancement for the Snipping Tool does not involve AI.

New Features Unveiled for Snipping Tool

According to a discovery by @phantomofearth, the Snipping Tool will soon introduce the ability to save screen recordings in GIF format. Currently, the application primarily saves recordings as videos, but the option for a quick and lightweight GIF is a welcome addition for those needing to share concise visual information. This new feature will also allow users to adjust output quality, enabling them to select lower file sizes or clearer images, according to their needs.

Once the update is implemented, users will notice a new GIF button located in the upper-right corner of the Snipping Tool window when saving recorded videos. Additionally, a shortcut—Ctrl + G—will facilitate the quick export of GIFs.

What’s Next for Snipping Tool?

Although Microsoft has yet to officially announce this feature, it is likely to be included in an upcoming preview build within the Windows 11 Insider program.
