Snapchat has unveiled an exciting new collaboration with Google, announcing the integration of Google Gemini’s AI capabilities to enhance the user experience with Snapchat’s My AI chatbot.
The addition of Gemini AI is set to make Snapchat’s My AI chatbot significantly more intelligent. Since its launch in 2023, My AI has been trained on a variety of texts using OpenAI’s GPT models. However, the transition to Gemini AI will enable My AI to process and interact not just with text but also with images and videos, elevating the chatbot’s multimodal capabilities.
According to Google, integrating Gemini AI into My AI has resulted in a 2.5x increase in engagement among users in the US. Snap’s CEO, Evan Spiegel, mentioned in a press release:
This partnership with Google Cloud reinforces everything that’s so important to serving our community. Now with Gemini in My AI, Snapchatters can learn so much more about the world, do it really quickly in the moment, and easily share that with friends.
Reflecting on the decade-long collaboration between Google and Snapchat, Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, commented:
Snap was an early leader in helping people communicate in a digital world, and now it is at the forefront of using generative AI to build agents that create new value for its community. Gemini models on Vertex AI are now powering millions of multimodal interactions in the Snapchat app every day, enabling Snapchatters to engage more effectively with My AI, complete with built-in accuracy and safety features.
With the capabilities of Gemini AI, the My AI chatbot will allow users to simply snap a photo of any object and request a translation from the chatbot. Users can also record videos of various foods and inquire with My AI about which option is the healthiest—particularly beneficial for health enthusiasts. These functionalities echo the capabilities of Google Lens and Gemini.
