Apple Responds to Digital Markets Act with New App Store Alternatives
The landscape for iOS users in the European Union is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the recent implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA).This groundbreaking regulation mandates that Apple enable users to sideload applications from alternative app stores. With the release of iOS 18.2, Apple has made strides in this direction, allowing users to remove default applications such as Calculator, Calendar, and Notes, thereby increasing customization and user control.
Introducing Skich Store: A Game-Changing Marketplace
In line with these changes, Skich has emerged as a new contender in the app marketplace landscape with its innovative platform, the Skich Store. Primarily tailored for gaming enthusiasts, this marketplace allows users to discover and download games from a variety of third-party developers, along with personalized recommendations based on individual preferences related to various genres and types of games.
Accessibility and Features for Gamers
iOS users within the EU can conveniently access the Skich Store directly from its official website, with the main app also being compatible with Android devices. A recent report from 9To5Google highlights a prevalent challenge for mobile gamers: the difficulty in locating games that align with their specific interests, coupled with intense competition among developers for greater visibility.
Skich’s unique approach addresses this challenge by leveraging algorithms to suggest games across over 40 categories and genres. Users can not only discover curated collections of games but also enjoy a distinctive discoverability system reminiscent of popular dating apps like Tinder. Gamers can swipe right on titles that pique their interest, or left to bypass them, enhancing the personalized gaming experience.
Current Offerings and Future Expectations
As of now, the Skich Store does not host any game titles at launch, contrasting with competitors like Aptoide, which debuted in June featuring eight games. However, according to The Verge, users can expect games to start appearing on the platform beginning in March. Notably, since the Skich Store requires sideloading, it is currently restricted to iOS and iPadOS users in the EU only.
