The latest episode of Sister Wives season 19 premiered on Sunday, September 22, 2024. During one segment, Meri revealed her desire to completely end her marriage with Kody. To obtain this “release,”she needed to meet with her church leaders in Utah, who had previously allowed her and the other sister wives to enter a marriage “covenant”with Kody.
Kody, however, pushed back against her decision, refusing to recognize the authority of the church leaders. Despite this, he expressed his desire for Meri to leave him, confirming that there was nothing left in their relationship.
Kody remarked that the Meri he married was entirely different from the Meri he knew now. He attributed their issues to her anger problems and highlighted the dysfunction that arose after Janelle and Christine joined their family. According to Kody, Meri lost her kindness and charm, which he found uninteresting.
He also placed blame on the sister wives for distancing him from their lives. This prompted a backlash from Sister Wives fans on X, who criticized Kody for speaking poorly of Meri. Many felt it was unfair to solely blame Meri and the other sister wives for the deterioration of his relationships.
“Kody is disrespectful to everyone but the way he talks about Meri is absolutely disgusting,”a fan wrote.
“I don’t even like Meri but the way Kody speaks about her is a special kind of heinous. That’s absolutely nothing she did — despite whatever mistakes she did make — to deserve that kind of poison from this living, breathing piece of sh*t,”another fan commented.
“The way Kody talks about Meri is atrocious. Like if you don’t love her that’s fine, but honor the decades you shared and be respectful,”one netizen tweeted.
Numerous Sister Wives fans expressed their disapproval of Kody’s derogatory comments about Meri’s character.
“‘It took forever for her to finally realize,’ yeah, Kody, because you kept giving Meri breadcrumbs for years and never actually releasing her. What a piece of sh*t to sit here and say he needed her to ‘go away.’ A mother to his children. Unbelievable!”a user reacted.
“Kody saying Meri ‘wasn’t interesting’ is so mean it’s crazy,”one person commented.
“I’m sorry Kody is upset when the family talks badly about him… but he has NO ISSUE! BEING extremely rude and cruel to Meri?!”another fan wrote.
“Kody, about not wanting to go through the church to ‘divorce’ Meri, and her finally leaving: ‘I needed her to just go away.’ He calls her mean, boring, and essentially unlovable, among other gross things. He’s a pig,”one user tweeted.
Simultaneously, Sister Wives fans criticized Kody for blaming Janelle and Christine for the decline of his marriage.
“Dear TLC, you need to move this show to the present. Kody clearly doesn’t want to accept responsibility for his actions, and it is extremely sickening to hear him badmouth Meri, Janelle, and Christine,”another person reacted.
“Kody was too much of a coward to actually tell Christine, Meri, and Janelle that it was over. Instead, he pushed them out and mistreated them until they left,”a netizen commented.
“I needed her just to go away”— Sister Wives star Kody reflects on his fallout with Meri
Kody appeared hesitant upon learning that Meri sought an official “release”from their marriage by going to her church in Utah. He confessed that he did not want to be accountable to the church or their rules. Meanwhile, Meri was set on completely separating herself from Kody, explaining that she had felt “in limbo”for a decade.
Despite his reservations, Kody stated he would allow Meri to “do her thing,”as he wanted to avoid further confrontation.
“I needed her to just go away because it took forever for her to finally realize it’s been done and over for years,”Kody remarked.
Kody then reflected on his relationship with Meri, stating that “she was very different”when they first married. He expressed that he could not live in a world where she was perpetually angry at him. Kody continued to assign blame to Janelle and Christine for complicating his relationship with Meri.
Since he could not pursue a divorce in a polygamous marriage, Kody mentioned he attempted to mend his relationship with Meri. However, whenever he interacted with her, she seemed “not nice.”
“She wasn’t fun, she wasn’t kind, she wasn’t interesting. I’m trying to be curious with her and I’m bored,”Kody expressed.
While he recognized that Meri felt “abandoned,”he insisted that he was not responsible for her feelings. Despite lacking love for any of them, he did not intend to sever connections, holding the women accountable for their actions.
Sister Wives airs Sundays at 10 pm ET on TLC.
