Apple’s recent announcement regarding iOS 18 indicates a postponement of the much-anticipated Apple Intelligence features, originally slated for release in 2025. This includes enhancements to Siri’s capabilities, highlighting the company’s current challenges in the generative AI landscape.
Apple Delays Launch of Innovative Siri Features
In a recent conversation with Daring Fireball, an Apple spokesperson confirmed that the launch of the revamped personalized Siri functionalities is set back yet again. Initially expected alongside the iOS 18.4 update, news emerged prior to the beta version’s release that these features would be postponed to iOS 18.5. Although many anticipated deployment by May, users can now expect the rollout to occur “in the coming year.”
“Siri helps our users find what they need and get things done quickly, and in just the past six months, we’ve made Siri more conversational, introduced new features like type to Siri and product knowledge, and added an integration with ChatGPT. We’ve also been working on a more personalized Siri, giving it more awareness of your personal context, as well as the ability to take action for you within and across your apps. It’s going to take us longer than we thought to deliver on these features and we anticipate rolling them out in the coming year.”
The forthcoming personalized Siri will be a substantial upgrade, enabling Siri to grasp personal context, utilize on-screen awareness, and establish deeper integration within apps. Such enhancements are vital for Siri to effectively challenge competitors like ChatGPT and Google Assistant. At present, Apple is trailing in the competitive AI landscape, with rivals such as Samsung and Google making significant strides. Furthermore, the company has removed its promotional content linked to these features from YouTube.
Apple appears to be facing an AI development crisis, particularly concerning Siri. The company has been collaborating with its team of developers and engineers to refine these capabilities for some time. These delays in AI feature launches are likely to impact Apple’s credibility in the market and may deter potential investors. Additionally, a recent report from Reuters has raised concerns that the rollout of the anticipated Siri features could be postponed even further, potentially until 2026.
This delay could also have repercussions on the upcoming iOS 19 updates, potentially affecting their implementation timeline and prolonging the cycle of delays. As the speculation looms, do you believe Apple will successfully launch the Apple Intelligence Siri features before unveiling the first beta of iOS 19 at this year’s WWDC event?
