Warning: Spoilers from the season 2 finale of Silo follow.
In the gripping finale of Silo season 2, Juliette Nichols, portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson, faces a major setback as the protective suit she intended to wear is unexpectedly destroyed. Throughout this season, Juliette has been on a mission to return to Silo 18, urgently requiring safe gear to prevent the residents from venturing outside into the hazardous atmosphere without proper protection. Unfortunately, the suit she arrived in is now severely damaged, rendering it ineffective against the toxic conditions that plague the exterior environment.
Silo 17’s Protective Suit Is Rendered Useless
Not Suitable for External Use

When Juliette finally accesses the suit stored in the IT department, she is dismayed to find it full of holes and in tatters, making it as ineffective as her prior damaged suit. This destruction appears to be the result of underground pests such as rats, moths, or similar creatures. Although no life can endure the toxic air outside, it seems plausible that certain critters have managed to thrive in the subterranean environment, ultimately compromising the integrity of the suit.
At this juncture, Juliette has established strong relationships with the inhabitants of Silo 17, who are eager to assist her. Even Solo/Jimmy Conroy (Steve Zahn), previously known for his deceitful behavior, is now genuinely committed to helping Juliette secure safe protective gear for her return. With no motives for sabotage from Solo or the other survivors, it seems likely that the infestation of rats or moths is solely to blame for the destruction of the IT suit—a development that inadvertently may benefit Juliette.
Juliette’s Life Is Potentially Saved by the Destroyed Suit
The Multifunctionality of the Firefighter’s Suit

In a twist of fate, after the IT suit’s destruction, Juliette opts for a firefighter’s suit instead. Shortly after her return to Silo 18, she encounters Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins), but chaos ensues when fire erupts at the airlock. While viewers remain in suspense about Juliette’s immediate fate, it is anticipated that season 3 will confirm her survival, thanks to the protective capabilities of the firefighter’s suit. By contrast, Bernard’s fate is grim; showrunner Graham Yost has publicly stated that Bernard meets his end.
Importantly, the stark contrast between their suits highlights the implications of survival. As Bernard dies while donning the conventional containment suit designed solely to shield from exterior toxins, it suggests that Juliette would have similarly perished had she worn it. Fortunately, the firefighter’s suit provides a degree of flame resistance, which the standard suit lacks. Thus, the rodents and moths that damaged the IT suit inadvertently guided Juliette towards the only viable option for her safety, reinforcing the unpredictable nature of survival within the Silo universe.
As an exciting development, Silo has already been confirmed for seasons 3 and 4, promising more thrilling narratives ahead.
