The highly anticipated Silent Hill f is set to launch in just a few days across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. Developed by Neobards Entertainment, this latest installment promises to deliver an intense survival horror experience that not only honors the series’ legacy but also introduces innovative elements that breathe new life into the franchise. Utilizing the powerful Unreal Engine 5 and its impressive Lumen lighting technology, the game crafts a chilling atmosphere that fans have come to expect from the series. However, these stunning visuals come at a significant performance cost, particularly on console systems.

Performance Analysis: PlayStation 5 vs. PlayStation 5 Pro

Today, gaming analyst ElAnalistaDeBits released an insightful performance analysis comparing the game on both the base PlayStation 5 and the more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro. It appeared that achieving a stable gameplay experience required significant sacrifices in resolution. For instance, the performance mode on the standard PS5 operates within a range of 720p to 360p, which is reminiscent of last-generation gaming. In contrast, the PS5 Pro runs at a steady 720p, a resolution that feels unjustifiably low given its capabilities. Moreover, the implementation of PSSR technology on the Pro version raised concerns, as it still exhibits noticeable noise in shadows and ambient occlusion, drawing comparisons to older titles like Silent Hill 2 and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. Unfortunately, with no option to disable the upscaler, users are left to contend with these graphical anomalies for the time being, potentially awaiting a patch for resolution improvements.

PC Performance: A Bright Spot Amid Challenges

Despite the performance challenges faced on consoles, it is encouraging to observe that Silent Hill f runs relatively well on PC. During my gameplay experience, I encountered only minor issues early on and a slight hitch later in the game—an improvement compared to many other titles utilizing Unreal Engine 5 which have suffered from performance drawbacks. While stable performance on the PlayStation 5 is certainly a relief, the necessity of reducing resolution from the ideal 1080p underscores a broader issue within the gaming community: the current generation of hardware struggles to optimize the full range of Unreal Engine 5’s sophisticated features without significant performance compromises.
