Sidney Prescott’s Return in Scream 7: Why Sam and Tara’s Storyline is Crucial

Sidney Prescott’s Return in Scream 7: Why Sam and Tara’s Storyline is Crucial

Scream 7 plans to revive our beloved character Sidney Prescott, portrayed by Neve Campbell, even with the recent departures of Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega). Their narratives carry significant weight, especially given the franchise’s emergence alongside the surge in popularity of horror reboots and legacy sequels. After an 11-year hiatus, the Scream series successfully resumed with 2022’s Scream, which introduced a fresh wave of Ghostface killers and victims, focusing on sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter.

The events of Scream 2022 saw familiar faces like Sidney, Dewey (David Arquette), and Gale (Courteney Cox) returning to support the Carpenters and their friends during a new spate of murders in Woodsboro. The sequel, Scream 6, escalated the tension as Sam and Tara, alongside their surviving friends and Gale, battled yet another Ghostface, now lurking within the urban jungle of New York City. Meanwhile, Sidney opted for seclusion, prioritizing her safety alongside her husband and children. However, with rumors swirling about Barrera’s exit and Ortega’s departure, Sidney’s return as the Final Girl takes precedence, yet it’s crucial that the film respects Sam and Tara’s journey.

A Disturbing Revelation in Scream 6: The Ghostface Shrine

Sam approaches the shrine in Scream 6

Unprecedentedly dark, Scream 6 introduced multiple Ghostface killers and the spine-chilling Ghostface shrine. This installment dared to dive deeper than any before, focusing on Sam, Tara, Gale, the Meeks-Martin twins, and their new companions, all menaced by Detective Bailey (Dermot Mulroney) and his family, who were linked to Scream 2022’s villain, Richie (Jack Quaid).

The shrine stood as a horrifying museum of memorabilia from past Ghostface murders and various props from the fictional Stab films. Hidden within an abandoned theater, discovered by Gale during her investigation, it held troubling artifacts, including robes, masks, and weapons utilized by earlier killers. Given Bailey’s investigative background, assembling such a disturbing collection would have been comparatively simple, yet it served as a chilling reminder of the saga’s darkest moments. Though it was dismantled by police at the end of Scream 6, it left an indelible mark on the narrative, particularly for Sidney, whose connections to the Ghostface lineage run deep.

Bridging the Gap: How Scream 7 Can Update Sidney on Sam and Tara

Sid’s Need for Knowledge Regarding Scream 6

While plot specifics for Scream 7 remain under wraps, it’s essential for Sidney to be informed about the events from Scream 6. Speculation about a time jump exists, allowing the film to explore Sidney’s family dynamics. Given that her children were very young during the last events, Scream 7 must integrate Sidney’s need for awareness about the fate of Sam and Tara, especially since they were pivotal in confronting Ghostface (or three of them).

Continuity is key. Despite the absence of the previous Final Girls, Scream 7 should ensure Sidney catches up on Sam and Tara’s journeys. This doesn’t necessitate making Sam and Tara the main plot focus, but updating Sidney will enrich her character arc and enhance her confrontation with the next embodiment of Ghostface.
