Shuhei Yoshida Discusses PlayStation VR2 Features and Future

Overview

  • PSVR2 falls short of popularity compared to the historic success of the PS2.
  • Initial hardware sales of PSVR2 lagged behind those of earlier PlayStation systems.
  • Recent game releases suggest a potential resurgence in interest and sales for PSVR2.

Shuhei Yoshida, a prominent figure at Sony, has expressed his regret over the PlayStation VR2 not achieving the iconic status of the PS2. Launched in February 2023, the PSVR2 was expected to elevate virtual reality (VR) gaming, reaching out to casual gamers and enhancing its appeal across the gaming landscape. Although it has seen some success, the PSVR2 has not completely transformed VR into a mainstream favorite as enthusiasts had anticipated.

Shortly after its debut, it became evident that sales for the PSVR2 hardware were disappointing, with only a few hundred thousand units sold in the initial months—drastically lower than the PS2’s record of 1 million units in a similar launch period. Notably, flagship games like Resident Evil 4 VR and Horizon: Call of the Mountain have maintained a degree of player interest by leveraging popular franchises; however, this support was insufficient to maintain a thriving ecosystem around the PSVR2. Since then, it seems that the support from PlayStation for this hardware has decelerated, reflecting a shift in focus away from the PSVR2.
