Showrunner Teases Torres’ Response to Gloria’s Death in Chicago PD Season 12

Chicago P.D.‘s dedicated showrunner, Gwen Sigan, has shared intriguing insights about the upcoming developments for Dante Torres, portrayed by Benjamin Levy Aguilar, as season 12 progresses. This NBC police drama, part of the One Chicago franchise created by Dick Wolf, centers on the Intelligence Unit of the Chicago Police Department, led by the tough-as-nails Sergeant Voight, played by Jason Beghe. Since his introduction in season 9, Torres has captivated audiences with his blend of street smarts and a troubled past.

Recently, in an interview with ScreenRant, Sigan elaborated on how the tragic death of Gloria will dramatically influence Torres’ journey moving forward. During the undercover operation in season 11 aimed at infiltrating the drug cartel led by Rafael Perez, Torres unexpectedly formed a personal bond with Gloria, Rafael’s wife. Their relationship rapidly became intimate, which not only jeopardized the operation but also placed Torres’ career on thin ice. The heart-wrenching midseason finale left viewers devastated as Gloria died in Torres’ arms. Here’s what Sigan conveyed:

It’s got a lot of repercussions for him. We obviously saw the consequences in real-time as far as the team finding out and how the team reacted and that feeling of betrayal that a lot of the members had that he did this. But we’ll also see a lot of the emotional fallout in the second half of the season.

This death triggers a lot for him and even all the way back to childhood. I think that question of why was he attracted to her, and what she said to him before she died, which was, “We are the same.”I think they were attracted to each other’s trauma in a lot of ways, and we explore that in the second half of the season when he’s emotionally dealing with the loss of her and also some other events that happen.

It’s an interesting descent a bit for him when he’s not doing well and exploring his relationship with religion and how that’s also kind of helped keep him really grounded. And now that everything’s sort of shaking in his foundation, that sort of shakes too. And so we see him in a different place, and it’s interesting and Benny’s been killing it, so I’m excited for everyone to see those episodes coming up.

The fallout from Gloria’s death is set to become a significant turning point for Torres. Her poignant last words, “We are the same,” will haunt him as he grapples with his own unresolved traumas from a turbulent past involving gang affiliations and a history of incarceration. This devastating loss not only reveals Torres’ vulnerabilities as a relatively inexperienced officer but also strains his relationships within the Intelligence Unit, where feelings of betrayal abound.

In addition to processing his grief, Torres must contend with the escalating pressures stemming from Deputy Chief Reid’s blackmail tactics. Reid is manipulating the leadership of the Intelligence Unit, aware that Detective Burgess and Sergeant Voight concealed Torres and Gloria’s illicit relationship from Internal Affairs. As Torres delves into his crisis of faith and reassesses his purpose in law enforcement, these challenges may push him toward a tumultuous spiral that jeopardizes his position at the 21st District.
