Showrunner Reveals Exciting Details About the Upcoming God of War TV Series

The Journey of Amazon’s God of War TV Series

Nearly three and a half years have passed since whispers first emerged regarding Amazon’s adaptation of the iconic video game, God of War. Initially dismissed as a mere speculation, the project received official confirmation in 2022, setting the stage for an ambitious television venture.

Rebooting the Project

However, in a surprising turn of events, the series underwent a significant reboot last year. Amazon’s initial plans involved Rafe Judkins, known for his work on The Wheel of Time, as the showrunner, alongside producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. Yet, changes in direction led to their exit and the appointment of Ronald D. Moore, a notable figure in television with a rich portfolio that includes classics like Star Trek: The Next Generation, Battlestar Galactica, and Outlander. Moore is now taking on multiple roles, including showrunner, writer, and producer.

Insights from Ronal D. Moore

During the San Diego Comic-Con 2025, IGN had the opportunity to speak with Moore, who shared his initial fascination with the franchise. He noted the compelling nature of the characters and the emotional depth of Kratos and his son, Atreus. As he reviewed the game’s cutscenes, Moore found the narrative rich with themes of family and adventure:

“There’s so much material there, and I really responded to the characters. I responded to the story of Kratos and his son, and then they set out on this epic journey in this world that was finely detailed and really interesting… I said, yeah, I’d love to do it. I think it’s really interesting.”

Staying True to the Game’s Essence

Although Moore admitted to not being a gamer himself and lacking the muscle memory for gameplay, he assured fans that the show’s tone would resonate closely with the vibrant spirit of the God of War series. He articulated a vision of the series that balances emotional weight with dynamic storytelling and breathtaking visuals:

“The tone of the show is trying to emulate the tone of the game… So it has this emotional heart, but there’s this sense of history of who Kratos is… So there’s a weight to it, but not so much weight that there’s not enjoyment along the way and there’s spectacle.”

The Road Ahead

As the production gears up, it’s still premature to anticipate a release date for the God of War series. Next on the agenda will be casting decisions, and anticipation is building among fans eagerly suggesting their preferred actors for roles including Kratos, Atreus, Laufey, and others.
