The Acolyte, the ambitious series from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland, faced cancellation due to disappointing viewership metrics revealed by Luminate. Despite sparking controversy—including an incident where a review-bombing campaign inadvertently targeted the wrong show—The Acolyte was officially axed in August of last year. Disney took two months to respond, hinting that the show’s performance did not justify its production costs.

Although streaming platforms commonly withhold detailed performance data, Luminate provided insights in its 2024 end-of-year report. The findings indicate that “while mixed fan reactions may have played a role, viewership significantly declined after the first couple of episodes and leading into the finale.“This stark drop is illustrated in a chart within the report, showcasing the show’s struggles.

While The Acolyte had its flaws, it certainly warranted a better fate than what transpired. Other shows, such as the MCU’s Echo and Agatha All Along, also struggled, while The Rings of Power Season 2 saw a staggering 60% decrease in viewership compared to its first season. The combination of external challenges and social media backlash only intensified the obstacles faced by The Acolyte.

Moreover, Luminate acknowledged that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has not fared much better in viewership; however, it displays a more promising pattern of audience engagement supported by favorable word-of-mouth. With a significantly lower budget compared to The Acolyte, the financial pressures associated with Skeleton Crew are considerably less severe. Nevertheless, these statistics will surely prompt reflection at Lucasfilm about their future projects.
