In a significant announcement, ININ Games and renowned game developer Yu Suzuki revealed that the beloved title, Shenmue 3, is set to launch on platforms beyond the PlayStation 4. An upgraded version of the game is slated for release on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and potentially on a Nintendo console, which could be either the existing Switch or the anticipated Switch 2. The official reveal is scheduled to take place at gamescom 2025, which runs from August 20 to 24.
The announcement also highlighted several enhancements and new features that players can expect from Shenmue 3 Enhanced. In a succinct bullet-point format, key improvements were outlined, indicating a focus on both visual and gameplay enhancements. Among these updates are high-definition 4K textures, expedited loading times, and support for advanced graphical technologies like DLSS and FSR. On the gameplay side, players will have the option to skip previously viewed scenes, select a “Classic Camera”mode, and experience various adjustments to health, stamina, QTE (Quick Time Events) windows, and in-game currency. An overhaul of the user interface (UI) is also part of the upgrades, alongside increased population density in urban areas through the addition of more NPC characters. Additionally, options will be provided to toggle certain changes on and off. Importantly, players who already own the original PS4 or PC versions will have a pathway to upgrade and enjoy the enhanced features without starting from scratch.
The history of the Shenmue series is notable, with the original game debuting on the Dreamcast before its later availability on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2018. Shenmue 2 initially launched on Dreamcast and Xbox, later reaching Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC platforms. Notably, this upcoming release marks the first time the Shenmue series will be available on a Nintendo console, bridging a long-standing gap.
Currently, Shenmue 3 is playable on PS4 and PC, with the Enhanced edition making its anticipated debut at gamescom 2025 for the Nintendo console, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC. Gamers are eagerly awaiting further details as the release date approaches.
