Shawn Mendes, the global music icon, recently opened up about his personal journey during a heartfelt performance in Denver, Colorado.
On October 28, 2024, at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, fans captured videos of Mendes sharing his thoughts on sexuality. He candidly expressed that he is “figuring out”his sexuality just like everyone else —
“The real truth about my life and sexuality is that, man, I’m just figuring it out like everyone,”Mendes shared with the crowd.
This discussion arose amid ongoing speculation on social media, where Mendes has frequently been labeled as gay. Although he has addressed these assumptions previously, he seized this opportunity to offer a more thoughtful reflection on his life and thoughts regarding sexuality.
Shawn Peter Raul Mendes is a Canadian singer-songwriter who gained fame in 2013 by sharing cover songs on Vine, quickly attracting a substantial following. Mendes’s 2018 hit “Señorita”marked a significant milestone as it became his first single to reach the number one spot on the Hot 100, according to IMDb.
Shawn Mendes discusses sexuality and self-exploration during his performance in Colorado:
During his Colorado concert, Mendes took a moment to reflect on the importance of being open about one’s sexuality, acknowledging the fear associated with societal judgments. He remarked on his commitment to courageously navigate his self-discovery, asking for understanding as he seeks to embrace his humanity and savor life’s moments —
“It feels really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that. I’m trying to be really brave and just allow myself to just be human and feel things. That’s all I wanna say about that for now,”Mendes explained.
Expanding on the topic, Mendes suggested that sexuality is not something that fits neatly into specific categories or “boxes.”He referred to it as “beautifully complex,”emphasizing that it’s natural for people to have varied experiences —
“I think it’s kind of silly because I think sexuality is a beautifully complex thing and it’s so hard to just put into boxes,”Mendes conveyed.
Mendes also expressed feeling a sense of “intrusion”from others regarding their inquiries or assumptions about his sexuality. He emphasized that understanding oneself is a personal journey that he continues to explore —
“It always felt like such an intrusion on something very personal to me. Something I was figuring out in myself. Something I had yet to discover and still have yet to discover,”Mendes concluded.
This isn’t the first instance of Mendes addressing his sexuality. In 2020, during an interview on “Armchair Expert,”he mentioned that people have referred to him as gay since he was 15. Mendes clarified that he identifies as straight but has faced challenges due to these labels —
“Everyone’s been calling me gay since I was 15 years old. I’m not gay and I’m like… and I really suffered with that sh*t,”Mendes stated.
Addtionally, he recounted his frustration with some close friends who identified as gay and tried to label him similarly, stressing that while there’s nothing wrong with being gay, navigating these assumptions can be tough when they don’t align with his identity.
Currently, Shawn Mendes is on a limited tour, focusing on select cities and music festivals worldwide. His next performance is scheduled at the Tempodrom in Berlin, Germany, on November 13, 2024.
