Singer Shawn Mendes recently clarified his comments regarding his ex, Camila Cabello, during an interview. In his appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast on September 30, 2024, the Treat You Better artist addressed his current relationship with Cabello, asserting:
“Camila and I have done the best job at preserving our private little fire of love for each other.”
When a fan commented on X about their bond, “They don’t play about each other,”Mendes responded, “No we don’t.”This led to a user, @th1nkinfast, asking for clarification during an Ask Me Anything session. Mendes replied:
“I guess to be honest it came from a place of being a little annoyed with all the projection over the last few months about us. I’m usually pretty good at just watching all the ‘noise’ go by but lately it’s been kinda bugging me, feeling human I guess.”
As news of Mendes’ comments circulated, fans quickly reacted. One user mentioned:

In a later tweet, Shawn Mendes expressed his desire to be transparent with fans about his feelings. He shared that it felt “intimidating”to be “honest and vulnerable”online where his words could easily be “twisted.”
The Canadian artist emphasized that he also supports his fans, adding, “All the rest is just noise.”
During his interview on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, Mendes reiterated how he was affected by ongoing comments about his relationship with Cabello:
“No matter how strong mentally you are, when there are millions of people commenting on it, it’s so hard not to be affected by it… this is real love and it’s confusing and hard.”
He expressed gratitude for having Cabello in his life, describing her as an amazing person. Reflecting on their romance, he remarked that it was “brutal,”stating:
“Love is a lot, but partnership is more than love and I think it has a lot to do with how you support each other in your day-to-day life and really being honest about who you are. And making sure that someone that you’re with is in support of that and doesn’t have to bend themselves entirely to be in support of that and vice versa.”
Shawn Mendes mentioned that he and Camila Cabello still keep in touch through text messages.
Cabello echoed Mendes’ sentiments during her appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast in March. She remarked that their relationship was “not a fit”and “didn’t feel right,”adding that while she loved him, they were better off as friends.
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello first ignited dating rumors in 2019 with their hit Señorita. Shortly after, they publicly confirmed their relationship while strolling hand-in-hand in West Hollywood. Mendes even traveled to Miami to be with Cabello during the pandemic.
In November 2021, the couple announced their breakup, with a brief reunion at the 2023 Coachella festival before calling it quits again by June.
As of now, Shawn Mendes has yet to publicly address the various fan reactions to his clarifications.
