Longtime fans of Shadow of the Colossus, the iconic action/adventure title from the PlayStation 2 era, have been eagerly awaiting news about a film adaptation that has remained in limbo for years. Originally launched by Team Ico and later remade for PlayStation 4 by Bluepoint in 2018, this beloved franchise has seen little activity since. With Team Ico dissolved and lead designer Fumito Ueda’s move to establish genDESIGN, the future of this IP has seemed uncertain. However, hope has emerged with recent information about ongoing efforts to bring Shadow of the Colossus to the big screen.

Well, Shadow of the Colossus is a game that I absolutely loved when it came out, and I played it several times. Plus, it’s one of those things that I keep going back to. I’m not really a big gamer, especially since I started working, you know? The free time you have shrinks, so there have been only a few games that I’ve really gotten into since then.
Muschietti conveyed that the script has potential, though he acknowledged the significant hurdle of securing a budget tailored for a project of this scale. He emphasized the importance of impressing a film production studio with the project’s viability
It’s a project that’s been in the works for years, and now there’s finally a chance to make it happen. It’s still in development, but I really love this movie. There’s a script I really like, and we’ll see if it ends up being the next project. It’s definitely not abandoned; it’s still alive and kicking.

While Muschietti’s enthusiasm brings some optimism, he highlighted the realities of Hollywood financing. He mentioned that the feasibility of the project heavily depends on the level of interest from studios and their willingness to invest substantial sums, ranging from $100 million to $200 million, for the adaptation. Muschietti has a clear vision for the film and is keen to execute it to the highest standards.
Sure, Shadow of the Colossus is definitely a cult classic, but to make a good movie, there’s a studio that looks at the numbers and says… Well, how much interest is there in making a movie like this to give the director 200 million dollars or 150 or 100?
Current Trends in Gaming Adaptations
The film industry has increasingly turned its attention toward gaming intellectual properties, and Sony is taking the lead. Recently, the studio announced two new film adaptations based on the popular franchises Horizon and Helldivers.
