Exciting Gameplay Reveal: TOEM 2 Announced at Day of the Devs

During this year’s Day of the Devs, indie developer Something We Made unveiled the highly anticipated sequel to their debut title, TOEM: A Photo Adventure, which initially captivated players in 2021. This delightful photography adventure, characterized by its simple yet captivating monochromatic aesthetics, gained a significant following, leaving fans eager for more content.

Unfolding the Journey in TOEM 2

Beginning with the same endearing protagonist from its predecessor, TOEM 2 immerses players in a whimsical village where the main character, equipped with merely a camera and a sense of curiosity, embarks on new adventures. Unlike the first installment, which centered on climbing the iconic TOEM mountain, this sequel focuses more on exploring the village and aiding its residents. In my initial playthrough, I engaged with four distinct characters, completing side quests ranging from retrieving a fear-dispelling potion for a timid knight to photographing three goats so a bridge troll would grant me passage. Each task culminated in obtaining a stamp for my personal collection, adding to the sense of accomplishment.

Innovative Camera Mechanics and Upgrades

The camera continues to serve as the player’s essential tool in TOEM 2, facilitating problem-solving through inventive photography challenges. Players can unlock various attachments that enhance their camera’s functionality throughout the game. For instance, one of the first upgrades I discovered was a hammer that could break through certain stone blocks hindering my path. This upgrade follows the intuitive gameplay style established in the original game, where players simply aim and perform actions. A delightful twist involves a mini-game element where players must tap out Morse code patterns to effectively utilize the hammer.

Creative Puzzle-Solving and New Mechanics

One intriguing puzzle involved sculpting a 3×3 block maze to replicate a model provided by a quest giver. Rather than memorize each side, I cleverly utilized my camera to capture photographs of the original sculpture, effectively using it as a creative tool for reference. The developers expressed genuine surprise and delight at this innovative approach, showcasing the dual role of the camera as a tool for documentation and creativity.

Moreover, TOEM 2 introduces a jumping mechanic that adds a new dimension to gameplay. Embracing the adventurous spirit of platform gaming, I eagerly experimented with jumping across walls and exploring varied terrains, leading to the discovery of collectible hats for my character. Given this new feature, it seems probable that some of the original attachments, like Honk, may be retired in favor of fresh mechanics.

Looking Ahead to 2026

For fans eagerly awaiting the launch of TOEM 2, it’s essential to note that there is still some time before this charming adventure lands in players’ hands. Developer Something We Made, in collaboration with publisher popagenda, has slated the game for release in 2026 across a multitude of yet-to-be-announced consoles, in addition to PC platforms.
