This incident involving the RTX 40 series graphics cards showcases some of the most extreme damage we’ve witnessed. The owner is currently uncertain whether MSI will honor the warranty for the affected unit.
Reddit User Reports Frightening Power Short that Ruined RTX 4080 Super
Graphic card failures can be quite dramatic, ranging from burned connectors to blown capacitors. However, recent reports detail a case that escalated to a severe level, ultimately leaving a hole in the PCB of the RTX 4080 Super. According to Reddit user u/TwistedCollossus, the GPU unexpectedly ignited after installation on a test bench, quickly emitting flames.

While the user did not provide details regarding their test bench setup, they did share several images of the damaged GPU. Notably, the photographs illustrate significant burning around the 16-pin power connector, which is typically located beneath the heatsink. The side views suggest a potential capacitor explosion; however, the damage observed on the PCB indicates a more severe failure.

The intensity of the short circuit was alarming, to the extent that it burned through the PCB. Possible causes for this catastrophic failure could include a capacitor malfunction leading to voltage instability, which in turn would cause the MOSFETs to overheat and fail, or direct failure of the MOSFETs themselves due to excessive current. Whatever the specific cause, it raises serious concerns about the safety of consumer electronics operating under normal conditions.
This incident specifically involved the MSI GeForce RTX 4080 Super Ventus 3X OC, and the user remains doubtful about the acceptance of their RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) request. Though they assert that the GPU was never dismantled prior to the incident, the situation complicates the RMA process, as there may not be clear evidence to confirm whether the damage occurred before or after the GPU was opened for inspection.
