Severance, the acclaimed psychological drama that premiered in 2022, is generating renewed interest as fans anticipate the release of its second season on January 17, 2025, via Apple TV+. Created by Dan Erickson and helmed by directors Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle, this innovative series has quickly garnered critical acclaim, securing the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Drama Series and multiple Emmy nominations. Led by Adam Scott in the role of Mark, the storyline unfolds within the enigmatic Lumon Industries where employees undergo a controversial procedure to compartmentalize their work memories from their personal experiences.
Recent insights from the show’s cast during an exclusive interview with Liam Crowley of Screen Rant reveal intriguing perspectives on how the upcoming season could reshape viewers’ understanding of season 1. Actors John Turturro, Zach Cherry, and Britt Lower shared their thoughts about the potential to explore the ‘Outies’—the characters’ personas outside of the workplace—which could provide a more comprehensive view of how their lives intersect and differ.
Turturro: It depends on how curious and obsessive or perverse you are, but I don’t know. I think there is a connection. It’s like when you used to buy a record. There was the A-side, there was the B-side. If you think of it that way, there is a connection, but maybe not. I’m not sure about that. I think that’s one of the mysteries of the show and one of its strengths is that we do have the capacity to be ignorant. They say ignorance is bliss about where we come from or our past, our baggage. So the show plays with that and it plays with our separation for our work life and our personal life.
I think there are definitely things that if I were to think back or watch moments from Season 1 that take on a new color based on that new information. Your mileage may vary on that. It depends how perverse you are, as John said.
Turturro: You can watch it backwards, forwards.
Lower: I think there’s something to be found in a rewatch for sure. Every prop and line of dialogue has been really cared for by the cast and the crew. It’s this giant puzzle that we’ve built and we all enjoy detailing each of the puzzle pieces for the audience to then kind of be in conversation with us about.
Decoding Severance’s Characters
The Second Season: A Deeper Look into ‘Outies’ and ‘Innies’
Delving deeper into the characters’ ‘Outies’ in the second season is set to enhance the audience’s comprehension of their dual existences. While season 1 primarily focused on the employees’ work personas, there were only brief glimpses into their ‘Outie’ identities. The forthcoming season could dramatically shift this focus, leading to revelations that might clarify or complicate the show’s intricate narrative.
Lower’s remarks about the meticulous production design underscore the idea that every detail—from props to dialogue—is intentionally crafted to serve a purpose impacting the overall storyline. This attention to detail suggests that revisiting season 1 will not only be rewarding but essential for fully understanding the complexities tied to the characters’ work and personal lives.
Furthermore, Cherry highlighted that the limited exposure to the ‘Outies’ during season 1 was a strategic choice, meant to build suspense and anticipation for future plot developments. Season 2’s broader exploration of these outside personas has the potential to reframe entire scenes from season 1, enriching our viewing experience.
