Severance Season 2, Episode 4 Major Twist: Impact on Mark & Helly Revealed by Stars

Severance has fans eagerly discussing how the significant twist in Season 2, Episode 4 will shape the future for characters Mark (portrayed by Adam Scott) and Helly (played by Britt Lower). The episode immerses the MDR team in a frozen landscape during an “Outdoor Retreat Team Building Occurrence, ”where they set up camp for the night. In a pivotal moment, Mark and Helly share a night together, but their bonding quickly turns tumultuous when Irving (John Turturro) wrongly accuses Helly of being a mole, literally putting her life in danger to prove his theory. Ultimately, the audience learns that innie Helly is, in fact, outie Helena Eagan, drastically altering the narrative.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Scott and Lower reflected on how this revelation will transform the dynamics between Mark and Helly. Although cautious about spoiling future developments, Scott noted that this twist profoundly impacts Mark’s perspective, particularly regarding their intimate moment. Lower echoed this sentiment, expressing empathy for both Helly and Helena given the complexities introduced by this twist. Their full insights can be found below:

Scott: [This] changes quite a bit in Mark’s mind. I mean, this was a life-changing moment for him. He’s been in existence for two and a half years or something, so this is huge. His feelings for Helly have only grown thus far this season, so by the end of episode 4, we don’t know how this hits Mark, what this means emotionally, but Helly is a huge part of his life. Huge. And I think that a lot of his identity is wrapped up in how he feels about her and how she feels about him, so you can imagine this being tectonic.

Lower: It’s obviously a gut punch, and they’re both going to reckon with questions of autonomy and consent. I felt empathy for Helly not having a say in what was happening, and then I also felt this empathy for Helena, because this is the first time she’s experienced this kind of connection and humanity, and it’s inside of a persona that she didn’t earn. So navigating the reality of that and trying to really see it from both of their perspectives, and obviously Helly’s perspective comes back online, so in episode 5, the rage and betrayal that she feels is justified.
