On October 29, Seungkwan from SEVENTEEN took to Instagram to connect with fans regarding recent allegations involving HYBE and purportedly leaked internal documents. In an emotional message, he conveyed his discontent concerning the effect these issues have on the mental and emotional health of artists, especially those associated with other major agencies like SM, JYP, and YG Entertainment.
Feeling compelled to speak out, Seungkwan emphasized the importance of defending not only himself but also his fellow group members, colleagues, and the fans who are impacted by this negativity. He detailed the overwhelming pressure that idols face as they strive to maintain their careers and satisfy their supporters.
Seungkwan pointed out that idols should not be viewed as “pushovers”or mere commodities for public scrutiny. He elaborated on the numerous challenges they encounter and the relentless effort they exert to ensure they present the best versions of themselves to fans. He urged society to recognize idols as individuals deserving of respect, rather than as objects of profit or gossip. He articulated,
“i hope you don’t think of idols as pushovers. you don’t have the right to so easily meddle into our story. not just us, but other artists included, we are not your commodities. i hope you don’t think you can use us and benefit from us.”
Despite feeling physically and emotionally drained, he remains committed to giving his all out of gratitude for his fans’ support. However, he stressed that enduring unfair criticism shouldn’t be necessary for him to fulfill his role as an idol, calling for a shift towards a more nurturing environment within the entertainment industry.
NMIXX’s Haewon reaches out to SEVENTEEN’s Seungkwan amidst HYBE controversy
For those who may not be familiar, the leaked documents emerged during a National Assembly audit on October 24, encompassing approximately 18,000 pages. These documents contained criticisms and unsubstantiated rumors about various artists, including unflattering comments on their appearances, talents, and behaviors.
A portion of the internal documents, roughly 20 pages, was leaked online, igniting backlash as fans called for accountability from HYBE. Since HYBE’s acquisition of PLEDIS in 2020, SEVENTEEN has been integral to the HYBE family, and Seungkwan’s poignant message resonated as a rallying call for positive reform throughout the K-pop sector.
Additionally, he shared a personal note from Haewon of NMIXX, who recently sent him their album Fe3O4: STICK OUT. In her message, Haewon commended Seungkwan’s unwavering passion and genuine approach to music, expressing that he serves as an inspiration for her and others in the field. She penned,
“Particularly for me, your music gives me so much influence/impact. It has been an energy, empathy, memories, and at times comfort. It was probably possible because of how you did everything with sincerity. I too want to grow to a point where I can gift my sincere self to someone someday. Please look after me until then.”
Seungkwan’s heartfelt letter conveyed his aspiration for the industry to cultivate a more compassionate and respectful environment, where artists receive empathy instead of harmful criticism.
Other members of SEVENTEEN, including Wonwoo, Vernon, and S.Coups, also expressed their solidarity by commenting on Seungkwan’s post. They shared encouraging words and echoed his sentiments, affirming their support for his message.
