Series Creator Neil Druckmann Hints at Potential Ending for The Last of Us

The Upcoming Launches of The Last of Us: April 2023 Highlights

Next month promises to bring exciting updates for fans of The Last of Us franchise. Starting on April 4, PC gamers will be able to explore the world of the award-winning 2020 sequel, The Last of Us Part II Remastered. This eagerly anticipated release will be available through major gaming platforms, Steam and the Epic Games Store, with Nixxes Software and Iron Galaxy overseeing the conversion process.

New Seasons and Narratives in the HBO Series

Additionally, the highly-praised HBO adaptation will launch its second season on April 13, featuring beloved actors Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. This season is set to cover key elements from the narrative of Part II, providing a fresh take that differs from the game’s version. Viewers might want to complete their gaming experience before the series airs, as the television adaptation is said to present distinct narrative shifts.

In a recent interview with Variety, series creator Neil Druckmann expressed: “I love the changes that we’ve made. It’s a different version of that story, but its DNA is in there. Maybe more than excited, I’m really curious what their reaction will be.”

Notable Character Alterations

Among the various adaptations, one significant change involves Abby’s character, reimagined to better fit the actress Kaitlyn Dever, whose physique differs considerably from the powerful portrayal found in the game. Druckmann acknowledged their decision to cast Dever, stating:

Kaitlyn Dever wanted to work with us; we wanted to work with her. It’s not worth passing it up to continue a search that might never bear fruit to find someone that matches the physicality.

Interestingly, Dever was considered for the role of Ellie before the team’s decision to cast Bella Ramsey, whose age aligns more closely with that of the character. While speculation surrounds this casting choice, both actresses bring immense talent to their respective roles.

Expanded Storylines in the TV Adaptation

The upcoming season will also introduce new story elements not previously explored in the game. For instance, the character named Eugene, who appears only in name in the game, will be featured on screen, portrayed by actor Joe Pantoliano. Druckmann highlighted the excitement surrounding this addition:

I get excited when I see these opportunities. I’m like, ‘Oh, I don’t know Eugene that well!’ The story we told in the game was somewhat superficial. The way this character comes in really gets to the heart of Joel and Ellie and their relationship.

The Future of the Franchise

Showrunner Craig Mazin hinted at the possibility of one or two additional seasons beyond the upcoming release. However, when it comes to The Last of Us Part III, Druckmann’s comments offered little encouragement for fans hoping for a continuation:

I was waiting for this question. I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.

This statement aligns with Naughty Dog’s historical trend of moving on from successful intellectual properties, having previously shifted focus from franchises like Crash, Jak and Daxter, and Uncharted. At the latest Game Awards, the studio unveiled its new sci-fi title, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Should this new franchise achieve commercial success, the studio may prioritize its future projects over returning to The Last of Us.
