Recap of Seoul Busters Episodes 15 & 16: Undercover Operations, Gang Arrests, Online Gambling Crackdown, an Old Friendship Rekindled, Comedic Arrests, and Heightened Emotions

The 15th episode opens with detectives Mu Jung-ryeok (Park Ji-hwan) and Jeong Jeong-hwan (Seo Hyun-woo) dining at their usual spot. They notice a flashlight inside the establishment and suspect a robbery, leading them to quietly investigate and confront a man with the device. To their surprise, the man turns out to be Minsik, the restaurant owner’s nephew, who is fixing a blown fuse.

Once the misunderstanding is cleared, the trio shares a meal, during which the detectives notice scars on Minsik’s face. As they inquire further, Minsik breaks down, revealing his entrapment in a spiral of online gambling debts and a large private loan that’s bringing unwanted attention from loan sharks. Fearing for his safety, he implores the detectives for assistance.

The team takes an interest in his plight, believing that a gang is orchestrating the illegal gambling operations. Working alongside the bank, they trace the loan sharks’ financial activities and set up surveillance at ATMs. Captain Dongbang Yu-bin’s presence during the stakeout makes some squad members uneasy.

Despite initial discomfort, conversations allow for bonding moments, as Yu-bin (Kim Dong-wook) surprised Jung-ryeok by expressing admiration for the lessons learned from him. He also reassures Jang Tan-sik (Lee Seung-woo) of his growth as a rookie officer, motivating him by acknowledging his potential as a great cop.

Yu-bin also shares a heartfelt moment with Seo Min-seo (Park Se-wan), expressing that her company never fails to entertain him.

During the stakeout, they spot Hwang Young-hoon, a member of the notorious 007 gang, withdrawing cash. The team follows him back to a hideout, leading to a humorous twist when Tan-sik recognizes the gang leader as a former classmate. After a comical exchange, the leader confesses their gambling proceeds are buried on a plot of farmland.

Jung-ryeok and Yu-bin retrieve the hidden stash, leading to comedic moments. They also learn about a lawyer named Yoon, who appears to be organizing the gangs under the shadow of a mysterious figure referred to as the “Master.” To flush him out, Yu-bin suggests the squad go underground as gang members, concluding the episode with the team preparing for this intricate operation.

In the 16th episode, the team dons disguises, with assistance from Min-seo’s sister, a makeup expert. They start posting intimidating photos with luxury items and cars online to attract attention. When no response comes from lawyer Yoon, they decide to infiltrate a gangsters’ union meeting to gather intel.

Feigning interest in starting an online gambling ring, they make contact with Yoon and are tasked with proving their loyalty by taking out a rival gang. Reluctantly, the squad executes the assignment, arresting the rival members discreetly.

After completing the assignment, Yu-bin and the others approach lawyer Yoon’s office under the pretense of discussing their supposed gambling venture. As Yoon details a plan for their operation, the squad swiftly moves to detain him and his associates in a surprising twist.

Despite their success, the mastermind controlling the operation remains hidden and only communicates with Yoon via coded messages. Yu-bin theorizes that the “Master” is likely in the military, leading to his capture with assistance from military police.

By the end of the episode, all involved gang members have been apprehended. Yu-bin offers reduced sentences to those willing to divulge information, which results in confessions from several gang members.

A particularly touching moment unfolds when a mother of one gang member arrives at the police station, only to hear her son downplay the severity of his actions, assuring her that it’s just a minor setback. However, she tearfully confronts him about the turmoil he has caused her, leaving the scene heartbroken. Her emotional words linger in the air, causing a heavy silence among the previously boisterous gang members, who are left grappling with guilt.

The closing scene of episode 16 shows Yu-bin deep in thought, reflecting on Min-seo’s comments about her father missing her graduation due to pride. He also recalls critical conversations with Professor Sim regarding a stalking case, which leads him to reminisce about his ex-girlfriend, leaving him in a state of contemplation.

Episodes 17 and 18 of “Seoul Busters” will be available for streaming on Disney+ starting October 30, 2024, at 12:30 PM IST and 4:00 PM KST.
