Recap of Seoul Busters Episodes 13 & 14: Squad Solves Billion-Won Art Heist as Min-seo Confronts Family Secrets

Episode 13 of Seoul Busters kicks off with the Violent Crimes Team 2 from the Songwon Police examining a scene of theft. Initially startled by the presence of red liquid on the ground, they mistake it for blood, only to find out it is melted strawberry ice cream.

Detective Dongbang Yu-bin (Kim Dong-wook) observes the scene, envisioning the incident, and theorizes that a group of school students is involved, pinpointing a middle school boy from an upstairs apartment as a suspect. He also suspects a robbery at a nearby convenience store, impressing the team with his quick deductions. As Yu-bin explains, solving these crimes is akin to piecing together a puzzle.

The team assures the elderly victim of their commitment to solving the theft. As they depart, Yu-bin notices Min-seo’s promise to the victim, vowing to recover his stolen wallet, which carries only 50,000 won, a transport card, and a photo of his daughter. This motivates Min-seo to take action despite the team’s initial indifference.

At her home, Min-seo finds her sister cooking, which strikes her as unusual. When teasing her about her dating life, Min-seo is taken aback to learn that her sister is preparing a meal for their father’s birthday, as she and their mother plan to visit him.

Min-seo declines to join them, recalling distressing memories of school days when her classmates spread rumors about her father being a fugitive. She is haunted by past police harassment regarding her father’s whereabouts.

Meanwhile, Professor Shim Hyeon-woo (Lee Chung-joo), a recurring character, meets with Yu-bin, informing him that cold cases are being reopened at headquarters. He invites Yu-bin to assist but he declines, citing his full workload.

Shim brings up a case reminiscent of Han Junho, prompting Yu-bin to ponder further. The scene shifts to a man who is seen downloading hundreds of images of schoolgirls in uniform onto his laptop.

Subsequently, the team is tasked with a major investigation into the theft of a priceless mid-Joseon period painting, valued at billions of won. Yu-bin promises incentives for the squad should they crack the case, leading them to meet with the victim, Kim Jung-soo, a collector of antique art.

Inside the secured art storage room, the squad marvels at the artifacts. Mu Jung-ryeok (Park Ji-hwan) attempts to replicate Yu-bin’s deduction techniques, humorously theorizing that a pigeon might have stolen the painting through a small window. His suggestions are met with skepticism from Jeong Jeong-hwan (Seo Hyun-woo).

As their antics unfold, a chaos ensues leading to the accidental shattering of a porcelain vase. When Yu-bin and Jang Tan-sik (Lee Seung-woo) rush in, Yu-bin discovers a piece of fur inside the fractured vase. A comical chase ensues as the team scrambles to recover the fur.

Simultaneously, while Min-seo spends her time at home, her sister visits their father. Min-seo reflects on her memories from the day her father was arrested during her high school graduation. Later, she tracks down the middle school suspect connected to the previous theft.

Upon confronting him, she learns he squandered the money from the robbery and sold the transport card to a stranger at a train station. Before letting him go, Min-seo insists he repay the value of the food he and his friends stole from the convenience store.

Back at the police station, Mu Jung-ryeok and Jeong-hwan are anxious about the cost of the broken vase. However, Yu-bin uncovers that the vase is a counterfeit and the fur belongs to a dog. The investigation pivots towards Kim Jung-soo’s daughter, who has a dog.

In a comedic turn, Jeong-hwan and Tan-sik collect dog fur matching what was found in the vase. Under serious questioning, the daughter’s husband confesses to switching the vase but denies any involvement in the painting’s theft.

Yu-bin assigns Tan-sik and Jeong-hwan to pursue further investigation, uncovering that a repairman had visited Kim Jung-soo’s residence twice. Although the repairman feigns ignorance about the door code, Yu-bin remains skeptical, resulting in the conclusion of episode 13.

At the outset of episode 14, the team gathers to strategize on the case. Yu-bin, now fixated on the repairman, investigates his social media activity, revealing he owns a drone camera. Cluing in on this detail, Yu-bin suspects the repairman is the thief, noting that he could have learned the door layout during HVAC repairs and returned in disguise to steal the painting.

The repairman is summoned again and confesses; however, he claims an art gallery director stole the painting from him. The squad seeks the expertise of a prominent artist, who initially declines but later agrees to help upon learning about Seo Min-seo’s father. He recounts how her father often spoke highly of her and sheds light on the circumstances surrounding his criminal actions.

Yu-bin narrates the legend of Min-seo’s father, known as the “Romantic Master Thief”—a master criminal who targeted the extremely wealthy, donating much of his earnings to a children’s cancer hospital. During this discussion, Min-seo realizes her father was apprehended shortly after leaving for her graduation, leading Yu-bin to encourage her to act on her feelings and avoid future regrets.

In the closing moments of episode 14, Yu-bin, Min-seo, and Jung-ryeok go undercover at the art gallery. In a humorous twist, Jung-ryeok pretends to be Japanese with help from a translator, yet fails miserably, resulting in hilarious misunderstandings. With Yu-bin sweating under pressure, Min-seo claims he has hyperhidrosis while Jung-ryeok pretends to have a medical emergency. Despite the uproar, they successfully apprehend the gallery director, who humorously insists he is Japanese, leading to a comedic moment as the translator relays his arrest in Japanese.

Later in this episode of Seoul Busters, the squad is rewarded by the police chief. Yu-bin declines a transfer to headquarters, instead advocating for rewards for his entire team.

In a touching scene at a train station, Min-seo waits with Yu-bin to return the transport card. Upon returning it to the elderly victim, they discover that the daughter’s picture is missing. The old man confesses his past wrongdoings to his daughter and wife and admits his shame at confronting them again. Before departing, Min-seo suggests that he reach out to his daughter, who may be longing for his call.

The episode concludes with Min-seo, filled with emotion, reminiscing about her childhood with her father. She weeps as she travels to visit him and offers him warm wishes for his birthday when they meet, presenting him with a tiffin box filled with food. Her father, beaming with joy, expresses appreciation for her visit.

The excitement continues as episodes 15 and 16 of Seoul Busters are set to debut on Disney+ on October 23, 2024, at 12:30 PM IST and 4 PM KST.
